    The SJCam SJ6 Legend is one of the newest cameras released by SJCam. It is the first SJCam with a 2-inch touch screen – a novelty which few manufacturers began to implement in their sports cameras. The camera also has its own external microphone sold separately. The camera uses a Novatek 96660 chipset and for the second time for SJCam a Panasonic sensor (MN34120PA, 16MP).  Some of you might remember that Panasonic sensor was used in SJ5000+ as well.

    As usual, SJCam fills the box with a lot of accessories.  Like many other SJCam products, here we find:

    As always SJCam makes good quality accessories. I never say anything bad about them but this time I have to mention the length of the USB cable. It’s more or less 25cm long and it doesn’t let you properly charge the camera or charge while recording. Personally I use the camera on my car and with this cable I can’t charge it while driving.  It could make it difficult to connect with your PC too because the camera is forced to stay literally hanging between the USB port and the floor.

    Design and build quality

    The design of the SJ6 Legend is just awesome, probably one of the best cameras I’ve ever had. It’s beautiful to the eyes and lovely to the touch. The camera body is completely rubberized to improve grip. On the front we find the lens next to the front screen and the three front LED’s. The feeling of the buttons is perfect, with a good “click” followed by a “beep” sound.  With the waterproof case the feeling remains extremely good. This is my first touch screen camera and to be honest I didn’t expected such a high quality screen.  I was expecting something inaccurate, with no quality and hard to use. Guess what I found?

    I found a phone screen. I’m not kidding, this screen is just like your phone screen: reactive, sharp, fast, beautiful to see and perfectly bright. It was an unexpected surprise to me and probably for all the other skeptical people like me. It also works perfectly at low temperatures. I tried it at -2C° without problems. Also with the waterproof case there are no problems with touch precision.

    Furthermore I want to congratulate SJCam for adding lots of lights everywhere.  The SJ6 Legend’s LED’s are visible from every angle.  They also added a little but very useful thing, the integrated screw mount on the bottom of the camera body, in Yi, YI 4K and Sony FDR-X1000V style. This mount allows you to mount a camera onto a tripod or anything with 1/4″ screw.

    What can I say, the body of the SJ6 Legend is good looking and has good quality.

    Let me say a couple of words about the USB port on the SJ6 Legend.  It’s not the usual micro USB like nearly all other cameras but rather it’s a mini type B USB.  You can find it on some of your hard disk drives but it’s very unusual use it on action cameras.  Even so, the SJ6 isn’t the only one that has this USB type. Gitup Git 1, Git 2 and the Dazzne P3 also use it. Probably the choice is made in order to use the same port for the external microphone and the charger.  It’s also much stronger than the “classic connector” called Micro-B but it remains quite annoying because you must use a different cable.

    Menu overview

    In common with all SJCam menus the SJ6 Legend’s is easy to use and very intuitive, in particular on this model because it’s possible to drag the menu up and down like a smartphone menu using the touch screen. The interface is almost the same as the Yi 2 4K.  Check it out if you want to compare them for yourself!

    The menu is divided in two macro sections.  The first is the “fast” – quick acess section where you have instant access to all modes of the camera.  This consists of:

    1. Video – Record a video
    2. Video Lapse – Shoot a photo every second and automatically create a 30fps video
    3. Slow Rec – Makes a slow motion video automatically
    4. Still – Shoot a photo
    5. Photo lapse – Shoot a photo every 3s/5s/10s/20s
    6. Burst mode – Shoot 3 photos in a row
    7. Video + Photo – Record a video and every 5s/10/30s/60s also shoot a photo
    8. Car mode – Start recording when the camera sees the movement
    9. Underwater – Slight change of colors

    The second section has all the options for every mode plus general settings.

    SJCam has exaggerated again with the settings just as I noticed when I reviewed their M20 model.  Some of them, such as sharpness, bitrate and quality, are simply useless because they don’t change anything on the images.

    Video

    I appreciate when a manufacturer tells the truth about their product on the product packing. SJCAM wrote that the 4K is interpolated and that’s great! For everyone who doesn’t know,  interpolation is the action of literally inventing pixels to reach a higher resolution. However, in doing so there is a big quality loss. If you want go deeper you can find the reasons here but the SJ6 Legend can’t achieve true 4K resolution.

    However, the 4K resolution isn’t the only problem because SJCam claimed “120fps” and “240fps” on 720p and VGA resolutions respectively but it’s not true.  Luckily this time all the resolutions and frame rates are good except for these two.  The first is actually 60fps with doubled frames.  The second is 80fps with tripled frames! I’ve never seen something like that before.

    Please remember that this camera uses a Panasonic sensor so it’s normal to find quite high quality videos: great colors, very good images and quite good sharpness. But if you use the SJ6 Legend without good lighting, it could be a problem.

    Usually an action camera is made to record videos in extreme situations – on a bike, during a run, on the snow, under water.  They’re made to capture incredible shots where and when other cameras simply can’t, but with this camera it can be frustrating because with some particular motions scenes are not as detailed as expected.  On the other hand it can sometimes be very satisfying.

    I found another strange problem. Sometimes, in a totally random situation, the camera makes a completely violet frame, just one.  It’s most frequent in dark conditions. There was a similar problem with the Sjcam M10+. Probably it’s a firmware problem but they didn’t fix it with the latest version.

    Here’s an example.  You can see it at 8 seconds and again in slow motion at 16 seconds:

    The camera makes good videos in daylight but during the night things change. Strangely it can capture light very well even from dim sources but it doesn’t capture the details. During the night it seems constantly blurred.  It also halves the frame rate when there is insufficient light. This is common for action cameras but it could be frustrating to set the camera at 60fps and have it record at 30fps just because the camera wants to.

    Update : The violet frame rate issue has been fixed in one of the firmware upgrades.

    I noticed another strange effect when the camera is facing into the sun. It creates a “glass effect” to compensate for the huge amount of light. This is how it looks in bright light just before the sun hits the lens directly:

    In this situation other cameras have different methods to avoid this effect such as decreasing the exposure. In this case I’m not sure if it’s a firmware problem or a hardware problem caused by the lens.

    Apart from these problems there is a new feature I’ve never seen in any other Chinese action camera. I’m talking about the 1080p Super. What is it? It’s a copy of the “Super wide angle” by GoPro, and personally I like it! It’s an extension of the higher and lower edges at the expense of distortion. The difference is clear:

    It’s very noticeable with slow shootings but in action it doesn’t seems that bad because the angle is taller so the viewing is better

    This is an action camera and usually they’re not made for or used to shoot photos, but if it can take good photos then there’s nothing wrong with that! But don’t worry, with the SJ6 Legend there’s no risk of taking good photos because the quality is very poor. The resolution is high, the sensor is good (Panasonic) and the colors are very beautiful but the details are lost.

    Once at home I noticed the sky in the photo was much brighter than the actual sky. It was sunset and it wasn’t this bright. In fact cars already had their headlights turned on. The speed of the photo was 1/16s – not fast but not so slow as to be a “long exposure” photo.

    Photos have another annoying problem. Sometimes if you try to shoot a 16MP photo the camera freezes and shows this message:

    Audio

    The SJ6 Legend records good quality sound with a beautiful mix of high and low frequencies without distortion. One minor criticism might be that the volume is a little bit low but nothing serious.

    • VGA 240fps  – 108 min 14.9Gb
    • Recharging Time – 120 minutes

    The tests were made with the screen and WiFi off. With the WiFi on the times could decrease by half.

    07/04/2017 NOTE – After 7 month of daily use, the camera had a significant reduction of its battery life. Today it is exactly the 25% lower than when I first tested it. Wow the camera in 1080p 60fps can reach max 45 minutes of recording. Even though slight reductions in battery life are possible, especially with every day usage, the reduction of 25% seems like quite a lot.

    WiFi and App

    The WiFi and app are absolutely perfect. It’s the same app as every other SJCam camera and the WiFi with the SJ6 Legend it works. By “works” I mean it does its job without problems and it’s fast (it can reach 2MB download).  SJCam probably has one of the best pairings of WiFi and app you can find among Chinese action cameras.

    Support

    I had the opportunity to use SJCam support and to my surprise it’s just how support should be. They answered my questions within 24 hours and they’re very friendly and professional. I exchanged a few e-mails and they replied to me EVERY TIME. They also made few helpful suggestions. This is what I want from company: Help the customers and do so with a professional attitude. In particular I want to thank Miguel for his incredible patience with me!

    Summary

    The SJCam has a great advertising campaign so it must be a great camera, right? I was expecting something on the level of a GoPro or YI 4K but it instead it was just another camera with some good features but without the incredible part. It has too many little issues like the violet frame, the freezing photos and quite bad performance in dark conditions and together they makes a big problem. I hazard to say that her little sister, the M20, is on the same level. Surely we’ll see a comparison between them on Pevly!

    Firmware Upgrade V1.4.3

    The entire review was based on the first firmware, version V1.0, because the camera was just released. This month SJCam released a huge firmware upgrade on this the SJ6 Legend. They released version V1.4.3. You can see all the fixes on the following link.

    In my opinion the biggest fixes are:

    • Added new frame rates, 1080p 50fps and  1080p 25fps (they are real).
    • Fixed the crash problem with photos. It wasn’t actually a crash but a hot pixel fix, a sort of mini tune-up for the camera. It used to start after holding down the shutter button for 2 seconds. Now the time has been increased the from 2 to 10 seconds so it‘s harder to accidentally start the hot pixel fix.
    • Fixed the Violet flash during the video recording.
    • Improved the light in night mode and in general with low light conditions. Now the images are brighter

    After these numerous changes, contrary to what they say about the image quality optimizations, I didn’t find any improvement comparing old and new photos.  Rather they decreased the video quality! Here you can find an example between two frames of the same subject with the different firmware versions:

    It’s clear that is was sharper originally. Obviously I made this comparison with the same options.

    In this article I want to compare two very small cameras, the smallest cameras we’ve ever reviewed. I’m talking about the SJCam M20 and the AEE MD10.  The specifications for these two cameras are so similar that they beg for comparison!

    Accessories

    The number of accessories included with these cameras is completely different. The difference is literally visible:

    The SJCAM includes many kinds of accessories including the usual (though apparently not for everyone) waterproof case, the 3M stickers, nine other types of mounts, a lens cap, the USB cable, a cleaning cloth and the manual.

    It also includes a pair of stickers having the SJCam logo, typical for their products.  Not every manufacturer sends so many accessories with their cameras.  One of them is AEE.

    As you can see from the photos above, the AEE sent only a single mount, a US-spec charger (I live in Europe so I can’t use it) and a manual with print and digital versions.  The SJCam accessories seem to be of average quality.

    There weren’t enough accessories with the AEE camera to evaluate them. The worst thing about the AEE is that I can’t mount the camera anywhere without the waterproof case, an additional option, so it means spending more money and placing another order.  It’s really frustrating.

    Design and Build Quality

    Other than their similar shape the design of these two cameras is completely different. The M20 has a beautiful screen in back and useful LED’s all around. It doesn’t matter if you’re under the light of the sun or moon, you’ll be able to see the screen wherever you are and whenever you want.

    By contrast the MD10 has a front display that’s not backlit.  If you’re using it in light it’s okay but if there’s no light in front of you can’t see what’s going on with the camera.  Another huge difference between the two screens is that the M20 displays a “preview” of what you’re “aiming” at while the MD10 screen just shows the resolution, recording mode and few other settings.

    You can’t see if the current shot is good or not. Also there’s a huge difference between the cameras’ buttons.  The M20 has all dedicated buttons such as on/off, up/down, mode, WiFi – it’s all clear.  The MD10 has all button combinations. To utilize the menu you MUST use the manual because it’s quite impossible to understand what’s going on with this camera.

    Menu and Navigation

    As I mentioned, thanks to its buttons the SJCam camera is very intuitive and very easy to use, so much so that it has another problem: it has too many menu settings and is a little bit confusing. Conversely the MD10 has an absolutely crazy method for navigation due the fact that it doesn’t have a real screen.

    Without any help from the manual it would be absolutely impossible to navigate the menu.

    Video Quality

    The SJCam M20 has a huge advantage in video quality: its wide angle. For an action cam a wide angle is a must. Yes, the AEE MD10 does have a 133° angle.  It’s not that narrow but the difference is huge when these camera are used in an action environment.

    An action cam must capture everything at any particular moment to be as realistic as possible, but you can’t do that without a huge field-of-view (FOV).  The FOV isn’t the only problem with the MD10. It lacks details.  And while it’s competitor isn’t the best on the market it has absolutely more definition and detail, enough to zoom in without much problem.

    Another difference is the colors. With the M20 the first thing you think is, “Wow, look at these colors!  They’re perfectly bright and true to life!”  With the MD10 it’s more, “Okay, the general impact is good but… that green was actually more green than that.”  There’s a difference with these two cameras.

    At night they both perform equally poorly. Both let you see what’s going on in very low light, something that’s not assured with action cameras, but the details are near zero.  This time the MD10 seems sharper but always with the same color problem – it’s too cold.

    However, if I’m going to zoom in on something they both have ridiculously poor quality.

    Both cameras were set at 1080p 30fps.

    Photo Quality

    Photos for both cameras have the same problems as their videos.  The only difference is that there’s also a light veil over the MD10 images.

    Photos were made at the highest setting available on each camera.  The AEE MD10 photos are 8MP; the SJCam M20 photos are 16MP.

    Audio

    The M20 doesn’t distort the sound, even at high volume.  The MD10 distorts bass frequencies even at medium volume – just listen:

    WiFi and App

    Both cameras have great WiFi stability.  The MD10 can even reach the incredible distance of 40m!  They have very stable connections, great apps (at least for Android), are easy to use and have very fast response.

    Summary

    SJCam M20 advantages:

    AEE MD10 advantages:

    • It’s smaller

    So the question is: “Which camera do you prefer?” Without a doubt my favorite camera is the SJCam M20. It’s much better at a lower price. Why would I choose the fewer accessories, fewer settings, lower quality and higher price of the MD10? This time the SJCam M20 wins against the AEE MD10.

    Today we’re here to review one more tiny action camera – SJCAM M20, advertised as the smallest camera SJCAM has ever made. The small-sized camera I reviewed was the AEE MD10 and this one is no bigger.

    Personally I love the SJCam brand.  My first action camera was the SJ4000 and with this latest camera SJCAM has made a great product. With the M20 model they used a 16MP sensor by Sony and usually when there’s a Sony it means there’s good quality. The thing about this sensor is that it’s tinier than others, it’s back-illuminated and has lower power consumption. So as George Clooney says in a famous TV ad, “What else?”.

    I think it’s time to show you the camera so let’s do it!

    Design and Build quality

    The M20 camera has an easy and practical design because it has the essential buttons for navigating without problems. This is a classic SJCAM feature, one of the many reasons I like their cameras. These cameras must be easy to understand with an immediate visible impact and the M20 has all of this. By the way if you can see a comparison between all SJCAM models in this article.

    The camera is very light to the touch but solid – there are no “dancing” buttons or slack ports. The front of the camera is made with a rubber surface to ensure a perfect grip and the rest of the camera is made by the classic striated plastic.

    The buttons are good too.  The two on top are concave to provide a better grip for your fingers and on the side are the usual SJ arrows to navigate the menu.  The WiFi button is also on the side. As always the accessories are good quality for a cheap camera.

    Unlike a lot of similar cameras the M20 has good software.  It’s very stable and has no problems. The menu is perfectly intuitive and easy to use thanks to the nearby buttons. The display is completely visible in any condition and even in full light it allows you to read the menus and OSD without problems.

    Menu Overview

    As I said before, this camera has great software, very intuitive and very stable. The menu has two modes, Video and Photo, changeable with just a click on the power button, and by a full menu with other modes and options:

    1. Video/Photo Mode -> These are the main modes switchable by pressing the power button
    2. Playback -> Here you preview photos and videos you captured
    3. Video Lapse -> This mode is to make a video in time lapse
    4. Slow Recording -> This mode is to make slow motion directly with the camera (-x2/-x4/-x8)
    5. Photo Lapse ->This mode is to make a photo lapse (3s/5s/10s/20s)
    6. Burst Mode -> This mode is to make 3/5/10 photos consecutively
    7. Underwater Mode -> In the mode the camera changes the color palette to optimize underwater colors
    8. FPV -> You can choose between LCD/FPV/LCD+FPV
    9. Motion Detection -> In this mode the camera starts recording if it detects movement in front of it
    10. Car Mode -> In this mode the camera turns on automatically when the car starts and turns off when you turn off the car (obviously the camera must be attached to the car charger)
    11. Remote Control (On/Off/Pairing)

    In “Options” we can find tons of settings but some of them are completely useless.  Let’s see all of them:

    • Gyro Sensor – It is the Gyroscopic stabilization (On/Off)
    • Audio – This is the setting of the camera audio (On/Off)
    • Volume – This is the regulation of the sensitivity of the Microphone (1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10)
    • Time Stamp – It is the time/date shows
    • TV Mode – NTSC/PAL
    • OSD Mode – It shows icons and information on the display (On/Off)
    • Video File Format – You can choose the format of videos between .mp4 and .MOV
    • Bit rate – You can choose the amount of the bitrate between High/Medium/Low
    • Double File – The camera create two files of the same video, the first with the right resolution and quality and a second one with a resolution 600×450 having horrible quality (On/Off)
    • PowerOnRecord – The cameras turn on when it is on recharge
    • Image Size – This is the size of the photos: 16M (4608×3456) /14M (4320×3240) /12M (4032×3024) /10M (3648×2736) /8M (3264×2448) /5M (2592×1944) /3M (2048×1536) / 2MHD / VGA 640×480
    • Quality –  This is the quality of the images (Fine/Normal/Economy)
    • Sharpness – You can choose the sharpness of the images (Strong/Normal/Soft)
    • White Balance – Auto/Daylight/Cloudy/Tungsten/Fluorescent
    • Color – Normal/B&W/Retro/Warm/Cool
    • ISO – Auto/100/200/400/800/1600
    • EV – -2.0,  -5/3,  -4/3,  -1.0,  -2/3,  -1/3,  0,  +1/3,  +2/3,  +1.0,  +4/3,  +5/3,  +2.0
    • RAW – RAW is a particular format of photos that doesn’t compress the images, so it allows to see a perfect photo (On/Off)
    • Distortion Correction – This mode corrects the distortion on the edges of the FOV (On/Off)
    • License No Set – Camera name
    • Date/Time – You can adjust the date and time
    • Auto Power Off – Off/3min/5min/10min
    • Keypad Tone – On/Off
    • Light Set – Here you can set the number of lights that turn on while recording or just when the camera is on (1/2/3)
    • Screensaver – 30sec/1min/3min/5min/Off
    • Frequency – 50/60Hz
    • Rotate – It allows you to rotate 180° the video (On/Off)
    • Logo Watermark – On/Off
    • Language – English/
    • Wifi SSID – Name of the Wifi network
    • Wifi Password – Set the password of the Wifi camera
    • Delete – Delete current file/all files
    • Format – Formats the memory card
    • Default Settings – Cancel/Ok
    • Version – The version of the firmware

    As you can see the M20, like all other SJCam cameras, has too many settings and some of them are completely useless. For Bit rate, quality and sharpness there’s no difference between the higher and lower settings so… they are simply useless.

    Video

    The M20 has 5 different resolutions: 4K@24FPS,  2K@30FPS,  1080P@30/60FPS,  720P@120/60/30FPS and VGA@240FPS. Let me say right now now that some of these frame rates are false. First of all I noticed that the box says “2K cam” and not 4K because actually it’s not a real 4K.  In fact on the side of the box the SJCam says “4K interpolated”.  At this point I thought all the other resolutions and frame rates were right because if they were honest with the 4K then there’s no need to lie about the others.  Well, I was wrong.

    The real resolutions and frame rates are:

    This is absolutely ridiculous because the M20 has a processor that can make the claimed frame rates so I don’t know why SJCam decided to tell this HUGE lie.

    Okay, apart from this annoying thing, let’s talk about how this camera really records videos.

    First of all I want you to remember that this camera has a Sony sensor.  In fact the video results are very, very good with incredibly true colors. This camera works great in every condition, even at night! I found just a little “problem”; it’s not a real problem but it could be annoying for some. In this video focus on the sky:

    As you can see the sky literally pulses. This is because the camera focuses the image in the middle of the field of view (FOV).  It works to make the center as good as it can so the “pulse” is nothing more than a light variation to always make the center perfect. Personally I don’t care for this, at least for my needs, and I understand if some people could be annoyed with it.

    Another great thing about this camera is the Gyro sensor. It makes a huge difference in stabilization at the cost of a little bit of field of view. To understand how much “space” it takes, this is a little comparison:

    But the gyro also has a limit.  In fact when there’s too much shaking it’s better to disable the function in order to avoid the blurring effect:

    To my own huge surprise this camera allows you to see in dark conditions thanks to the back-illuminated sensor.

    However there’s still a problem with the amount of noise in the images.  It’s very annoying because of the lack of details.

    I also discovered that in night conditions the frame rate is lower than in full light condition.  That means that when the camera is set to 1080P 60fps it’s actually 30fps.

    This is a good action camera, maybe one of the best I’ve ever tried, so the problem with the frame rates is a shame.  I hope they fix it in a future firmware upgrade.

    Photo

    This camera can shoot incredibly good photos, probably the best I’ve ever seen after the Eken H8R. It shoots 16Mp photos with a great resolution.

    The only problem is the common problem of “painting”: the far details seems like they’re made with a paint brush. This problem is minor because these kinds of cameras are not made to shoot photos like a real camera.

    I also want to show you the difference between the FOV variation:

    The only real difference between “Tiny” and “Medium” is the quality. Tiny has very bad quality and medium has normal quality.

    As you can see above, whether photos or videos, the colors look great but there’s a lot of noise when shooting at night.

    Audio

    I’ll be honest with you, all the videos above were made with the audio settings on default, i.e., on a scale from 1 to 10 it was set to 7. Luckily I found it just in time to record the audio test and show the differences between volume 1 and volume 10 at various car stereo levels.

    The volume set on “1” is near to mute – you literally must scream into the mic to hear something.  With the volume at “10” it’s sometimes too sensitive, enough to hear scratching yourself while driving!  I advise you to set this parameter to 8 or 9, neither more nor less, to have a good audio level.

    As you can hear the audio is good.  It’s not made to record an EP but it’s versatile enough to use it in every situation from a concert to school to a talk with your friends.

    Battery Performance

    The results of the battery test are:

    • 4K, 24FPS – 101 minutes, 16.4Gb
    • 2K, 30FPS – 100 minutes, 21.3Gb
    • 1080p, 60fps – 84 minutes, 17.9Gb
    • 1080p, 30FPS – 120 minutes, 17.4Gb
    • 720P, 120FPS – 120 minutes, 25.1Gb
    • 720P, 60FPS – 120 minutes, 15.7Gb
    • 720P, 20FPS – 123 minutes, 8.62Gb
    • VGA, 240FPA – 143 minutes, 19.8Gb

    The recharging time is 105 minutes

    That’s good performance for a 900mAh battery. I noticed that the last quarter of the battery takes more time to finish so if you’re at that last quarter you can still shoot some more videos.

    WiFi and App

    The WiFi and app are other two strong points because I never found any problems with them. The WiFi has a perfectly stable connection and the app is clear and easy to use.

    In Playback settings you can see the files on both the camera and phone.

    On this menu you can choose to download files from the camera to the phone or to delete files.  This works particularly well because the transfer rate easily reaches 2Mb/s.

    Summary

    With the M20 I can say that SJCAM has made another good camera.  It’s cheap, easy to use, has a good battery and stable software. The only notable cons are the issue with the FPS (I hope they will correct it with the next firmware upgrade) and the huge amount of noise in night images. I think that for $119 you can’t ask for anything more.

    After the first 360° camera I reviewed, the Cube 360, I have a similar camera to review, the Elephone EleCam 360. This time there are two lenses for a real 360° immersion and at quite a low price. Recording with this camera allows you to view a genuine VR (Virtual Reality).  I myself didn’t believe that these kinds of cameras could work that great.

    The EleCam 360 is a new 360° camera.  The dimensions aren’t the smallest on the market at (L x W x H): 6.00 x 4.90 x 3.20 cm / 2.36 x 1.93 x 1.26 inches. With it’s two giant eyes the camera can shoot two videos at the same time with 220° x 220°.

    The box is well made and seems very resistant to damage. In it you’ll find two other boxes, one for the camera and one for the accessories, and in general it’s well organized. In the boxes you’ll find:

    The quality of the Elephone accessories is incredibly high.  They have metal supports to offer better stability and every accessory is fully adjustable to ensure the camera is in the position you want. Only the generic tripod is quite cheap.  It’s articulated so it could be quite useful but it’s very light. The main problem was that when I opened the box I found it broken because it was not included in a box but was simply loose in the plastic bag, obviously unprotected from impacts during delivery.

    Camera Design

    The first thing you notice are the two giant eyes, one on the back and one on the front.  Let me tell you now to prepare yourself for a struggle.

    If you have problems with the law then don’t buy this camera: it could be dangerous because you’ll leave fingerprints all over the lenses!

    Part of the problem is that the camera has a very simple design composed of three buttons with a screen on the top; the SDcard slot and the USB on the side; and the screw mount underneath.

    The EleCam 360 seems well built.  The buttons make a great mechanical “click” together with an easily audible “beep”.  It also beeps when you scroll the menu, turn on the WiFi or shoot a photo.  Inexplicably it doesn’t beep when you start a recording and I really don’t know why. It’s very frustrating be forced to look to the LED’s or the screen. I hope they fix this problem in the next firmware upgrade.

    Another problem is how to transport it without damaging the lenses. It’s already difficult learn how to not touch them.  Bringing it with you on a walk for example is simply madness.  Elephone should include something like a soft bag with the accessories. However, in general it’s a well made camera.  The rubber door for the SDcard and the micro-USB port it quite solid.

    Let me warn you that this camera is NOT waterproof – don’t try to put it in water.

    Menu and Navigation

    The EleCam 360 has only one resolution for each mode so the menu has only the minimum settings necessary.

    • Format – Format the SD card

    An interesting menu feature is the System section. In it you can find information about the System and the memory card. Obviously the System information includes the name of the camera and the version of the firmware but the nice feature is the Card information.  It shows the class of the SD card, it’s full memory size and the free memory space.  This allows you to check the real status of the memory without using a computer.  I think this is one of the more useful things I’ve ever seen on an action camera.

    Navigation is very easy.  The power button is used to switch between video and photo modes just by pressing and releasing it.  Pressing and releasing the WiFi button turns the WiFi on or off but if you press and hold it for 3 seconds it opens the menu.  It’s also used to scroll down through the menu.  The third button, the recording button, is used for making menu selections.  To exit the menu you must press and hold the WiFi button for 3 seconds.

    Video Quality

    The video quality is quite good for this kind of camera but don’t expect the quality of a normal camera.  The resolution doesn’t reach Full HD and the angle is very wide so details aren’t that good over the entire FOV.  It has quite a good bitrate, 12.000kbps, for a 360° camera but don’t expect anything special.  It’s like seeing videos at 360p on YouTube. To make a 360° cameras as good as a normal action cam it would need to have a huge bitrate and resolution, but to have these features would cost more than 130€ ($145/£111). However, the camera does have great colors and allows you to shoot incredible videos or photos of everything around you. It’s also amazing how it can see things positioned above and below the camera.

    The difference in the light between the two lens is managed extremely well.  The only slow thing is the light adaptation which takes a couple of seconds.  Another thing: it’s not a real action camera because it’s best when it stays still and not when it’s in motion.  With VR (virtual reality) you risk feeling a sense of nausea. Here are two perfect examples:

    Another good point is the great exposure in dark conditions. The Elecam 360 is probably the best camera I’ve ever tested in the dark. It manages to capture all the lights and all the illuminated objects perfectly though with some evident video noise that diminishes video quality.  You can see it in this video.

    Photo Quality

    The photos have the same positives and negatives as videos. It has a resolution of 3008 x 1504 pixels so it’s not super wide and the details aren’t good.  It’s out of the question to try to zoom.  The colors are great: vivid and bright, they’re a perfect match with real colors.

    Audio Quality

    The EleCam 360 has an unexpectedly good microphone.  Usually this kind of camera doesn’t have good audio quality but it’s not like those other cameras. The volume is not that high but the quality is good.  It captures high frequencies very well while the lowest ones are a little bit poor but I don’t think you buy this kind of camera to record a concert and expect super audio quality.

    These are my classic three tests with the car stereo set 10, 20 and 30 volume:

    Battery and Memory

    The EleCam 360 has good battery life like all cameras without a huge screen but this one has double lenses so the processor must work more than normal. The result of the battery test is:

    • 1920x960p @30FPS – 110 Minutes (8.36Gb)
    • Recharging Time – 270 Minutes (4 Hours and 30 minutes!!!!)

    As you can see the recharging time is absolutely ridiculous.  I don’t know why it’s that slow. If you don’t use the camera while it’s recharging then it’s a waste of money to buy a 32Gb SD card because with the entire duration of the battery you can only record a maximum of 8.36Gb of video.  My advice is to buy a 16Gb SD card and nothing more. The battery is internal and can’t be changed.  The camera automatically creates a video clip every 23 minutes, 20 seconds (2.07Gb) and you can’t change it.  That could be a problem if you use the original software as we’ll see later on.

    One of the biggest problems on this camera is the crashing/freezing issue. Sometimes, completely at random, the camera decides of its own free will to freeze during a recording losing the current video. I tried other SD cards, I tried to cool it while recording, I tried to use it with and without the recharging cable but nothing happens. In this state you can’t do anything with it, even shut it down. The only way to unlock the camera is to press the reset button with the special tool or just a toothpick.

    This is a huge problem because you can lose your videos and if you’re outdoors without the tool or a toothpick you can’t unlock it. It’s absolutely ridiculous! If I find a solution I’ll add a little section at the end of this article so check it out from time to time.

    WiFi and App

    By now almost all action cameras have WiFi and an app for Android or iOS and the EleCam 360 is no different. Because the WiFi connection is perfectly stable, the app never crashed or had any other problems. The WiFi range reaches about 10 meters (33ft) without problems so you can put the camera on a table and shoot photos from a good distance. The app looks like this:

    As you can see the app is very very easy to use and very intuitive.

    Software

    The original EleCam software for the camera is called “EleCam 360 Video Converter”.  It works well but it wasn’t enough for me.  After I dragged and dropped the video into this converter it transformed the file from this . . .

    It also changes the format from .MOV to .mp4. It not only makes the aesthetic changes but it also writes the metadata into the video code that allows, for example, YouTube to understand that this is a 360° video. I said it’s not enough for me because you’re forced to render the entire video, so if you have 20 minutes of video and you want to cut a part of it you can’t, and it’s not a fast program. It also doesn’t render the photos for some reason. Look at the time left… it was only a 10 minute video:

    Another problem is the metadata.  If you edit the video in another program then YouTube can’t see it as a 360° video. I spent many hours trying to find better software that allows me to cut the video before rendering it and also let’s me see the video in preview. Well, I found it. It’s called “SYMAX360 player” and you can download it here. It’s more complete than the EleCam software.

    Remember you that you are forced to “stretch” the video before uploading it on Youtube because if you upload it as “two sphere mode” then YouTube can’t see it as 360° video.  Therefore you’re forced to use this kind of software. I also found another way to edit your videos.

    First of all you must (as always) render it with one of the programs to stretch it but after that you can edit it with your favorite program with just one condition: Use the “Spatial Media Metadata Injector” program before you upload it on YouTube. You can download it from here. This eponymous program injects the 360° metadata into the file.  It takes just 2 or 3 seconds but it allows you to see the video in 360° on YouTube.

    A strange thing about this software is that when you upload a video on YouTube you’ll find this “seam” down the middle:

    The software I recommend will work good, but there will be a thin line dividing the video, barely visible but someone might not like it. This is probably the way the cameras output and software correspond.

     

    The line is not located where the front and back lens views join up.  Rather it’s in the middle of the front lens  – the one with the blue arrow.  It’s not too visible but it could be annoying for some.

     Summary

    In general the EleCam 360 is a good quality camera and the video and audio are  acceptable.  Apart from some issues easily fixed by a firmware update like the freezing/crashing and the missing “beep” when you start recording, I can’t ask for anything more for 130€ ($146, £110).

    If you search for a better 360° camera, a real 360° camera, then you’ll have to spend  400€/500€ ($448/$560, £337/£422).  In my honest opinion, if you want quite a cheap approach to this kind of camera then the EleCam 360 is the one for you.

    Amkov 7000S VS Eken H8R

    In this article I would like to compare two cameras, the Amkov 7000S and the Eken H8R. I decided to make this comparison because these cameras have quite similar specifications.

    I’ve been using and in fact have reviewed both of these cameras. You can read those reviews in addition to this comparison.

    Before we start, let’s take a look at the product specs of both cameras side by side.

    Accessories

    The accessories included with these cameras are nearly the same. The Eken’s look and feel like they might be slightly better quality.  Both cameras include many accessories – you can find everything you need because they’re provided.  Both sets of accessories are also compatible with GoPro accessories so a wide choice is available.

    Design and Build Quality

    The design and built quality of both H8R and 7000S is quite good. They’re both well-built but my impression is that the Eken might be a bit better crafted as it feels slightly more rugged in hand.  The buttons are firmer and I like the aesthetics more.

    Both cameras have a 2 inch screen in back which allows you to preview videos and photos and change options. The Amkov AMK7000s functions better in sunny condition because it’s brighter.  The LED’s on the Amkov that indicate mode, recording, etc., are also easier to see in sunlight than those on the Eken.

    Menu and Navigation

    The two cameras have quite similar menu settings and features (apart from gyro stabilization) but with one big difference: the commands. The Eken is very easy to use.  With the power button you can switch menus and scroll down on all the items, with the shot button you can choose the setting and with the Wifi button you can go back or exit from the menu. Where the Eken is very very easy and intuitive to use, the Amkov not. It’s a nightmare.

    To enter into the menu you must press the Wifi button (why?) for 5 seconds and once inside, you must press the WiFi button again to scroll down. But wait!  The menu is composed of two parts, the first is the video/photo menu and the second is the general settings menu. To switch from the first to the second you are forced to scroll until the end of the page and then press the power button, and if you miss the last spot, you must re-scroll the entire menu! The Amkov’s design is absolutely crazy!

    Video Quality

    I made these tests while I was at the sea.  I held the cameras next to each other and synchronized the videos to have the same image with both cameras. All the videos have been recorded at 1080p with 60fps.  Audio was also recorded in every video to compare it too.

    In these three videos the cameras were in the waterproof case:

    In video test 1 above you can see the differences in the colors. The Amkov has more real-life, faithful and vibrant colors whereas the Eken has more saturation and gives less details due to it’s lower quality image sensor.

    In video test 3 you can see the difference between these two cameras in a quick change of light and above water/underwater colors. The Amkov captures more green colors, in fact under the water seems it like a lake (and it was like this).  The Eken captures a beautiful blue/light blue under the water and the sky looks great, but the water was green as Amkov captured it because at this time of year there is a lot of seaweed in this zone.

    The Amkov is more credible when it comes to colors. In video test 3 however the Eken has a better underwater image, especially in this example. On the other hand, if you are striving for a natural look rather than one that’s too vivid, then Amkov wins this one as well.

    In video test 4 you can perfectly see the difference in details and sharpness between the two cameras.

    As you can see in the screenshot above the Eken H8R footage has fewer details, it’s all kneaded like a shapeless mass of colors but you can’t understand anything beyond a few meters of distance.

    The following video was made without the waterproof case, and a part the better sharpness, you can see the difference of light and exposition between the cameras. Additionally pay attention to gyro video stabilization which Amkov 7000S has but the Eken H8R lacks.

    At night or at least in low light the Amkov is completely unusable because, for example, using it as a dashcam you can’t see your own lights – it’s completely black!  The Eken is a little bit better but don’t expect a miracle.  It’s hard to see your lights with it too.

    Photo Quality

    In video quality I think the Amkov wins without much problem but about photos?

    These photos were captured at 20MP with the Amkov and 12MP with the Eken (maximum resolutions). Please be aware that the 7000s can’t capture native images at these resolutions. As a matter a fact, the Amkov 7000S has only a 4mp image sensor so the resolution is interpolated. Also notice that the Amkov as a narrower FoV (Field of View).  In fact it misses a lot of angle on the left and right.

    As you can see in these samples, this is where 12MP sensor beats 4MP one – in image sharpness and details. While this is not so important for the video, it matters when you try to crop a still image. Eken H8R wins when it comes to photo quality.

    Audio Quality

    I included audio in all the preview videos above but then I more or less made this section anyway.  Here are dedicated audio tests.

    As you can hear the Eken records mostly the low frequencies and the Amkov the higher. The Eken seems to capture more ambient sound but neither microphone is good after all.

    With this other video I don’t want to test the distortion, only the quality of the audio:

    As you can hear, the Eken captures mostly low frequencies in fact results in a “warmer” sound than the Amkov which captures mostly high frequencies. I don’t know which camera has better sound because both of them have huge frequency gaps.

    Battery Performance

    The results of battery test are:

    As you can see the Amkov has a better battery.  There are some differences in the frame rates but the Eken has false 30fps at 4K because it make 15fps doubled. Anyway the Eken has better optimization with the high resolutions but I think that 4K and 2.7K  are too big for a normal screen so they’re unusable.  I think it’s more important have better optimization at 1080p or 720p as with the Amkov.

    Summary

    The Eken offer the same accessories as the Amkov and this is good for both cameras. The Amkov has a problem with the menu – it’s very annoying to use.  Instead the Eken has a great menu concept. Both  cameras have waterproof case issues.  The Amkov has a little dot on the plastic in front of the lens (I fixed it myself) and the Eken has a gasket problem. Other features of both cameras are the same.  Amkov fixed its Wifi issues and now it’s perfect like the Eken.  The remote controller is better than the Eken

    It’s a good match but the Eken has a serious drawback, the video quality. You can shoot the best photos in the world, you can have the best WiFi and remote control, you can have the best menu of all the other cameras, but if you are an ACTION CAMERA and you CAN’T shoot good videos, I’m sorry but you lose this match and probably a lot of other matches with other cameras too.

    The Eken H8R action camera is part of Eken’s H-series of 4K Ultra HD cameras.  My colleague Pavle, founder and Editor-in-Chief of Pevly, tested their H9 camera, another (nominal) 4K model, earlier this year and had quite a favorable impression. He said it’s “one of the best cheap beginners action cameras” and included it on his list of Best Action Cameras.  My H8R was selling for about $8o to $100 in the US (around 71€ to 89€) at the time of this test but the retail list price is $136 (around 121€).

    At those prices is the H8R as good a value as its $49 (about 44€) H9 sibling?  Does it deserve equally high praise?  Read on for the answers to those questions and many more.

    Eken H8R Action Camera

    Specifications

    The H8R is a dual-screen camera.  In addition to the 2-inch LCD screen on the back of the camera it has a smaller, front-facing status screen that displays basic information including battery status, WiFi On/Off, mode, video resolution, frame rate and the count of the duration of the video or remaining photos.

    The camera has a Sony IMX078 image sensor and a Sunplus 6350 image processor.  The “R” designation in the H8R model number indicates that a 2.4 GHz wireless remote control is included.

    Design and Build Quality

    The Eken H8R has a good design.  It’s has a beautiful look and feel and seems very well built. All around the camera there is the classic anti-slip surface and on the front the plastic is completely matt with a rubbery feel.  Personally I love it!

    There are three buttons and all of them are big enough to fit your fingers perfectly.  They also have a good mechanical “click” sound when you press them followed by a “beep” from the internal speaker.

    The resistance is perfect – in fact it’s impossible to accidentally press them.

    The battery space is so precise that you can use it without the door because the battery is hard to pull out even with your hand. During my tests I noticed that if it’s been on for a long time it heats up enough to burn your fingers around the SD card slot the screen gets very hot.

    This is probably because it is so compact.  I suggest that you don’t use it for too long time continuously, like a dash cam for instance, because it might actually melt some parts of the camera.

    Both screens are easy to see.  The main screen might be a little less so in full light but the status screen is also a color display and easy to read in all lighting conditions.

    As you can see the Eken H8R doesn’t have  ANY LED’s.  I think this is a very stupid design choice because you can’t tell if the camera is recording or not or if it’s recharging or not.  Depending of your position or distance from the camera you can’t understand what it’s doing!  It has an “auto switch off screen” to turn off the main screen automatically after 1, 3 or 5 minutes.  When the screen is off, from the back of the camera you don’t even know if it’s still working so you’re forced to click something to check.

    The battery door and the battery slot are very precise components.  In fact the battery is hard to remove (the trick is to move it left and right a few times)

    The waterproof case has a defect, or rather the case by itself is well built but the gasket is not perfectly aligned with the plastic case.  I doubt it would remain watertight under pressure at diving depths. I made a test in my sink and it works great, but 20 cm of water is not enough to test the full performance at depth. Eken H8R Photo 9 Eken H8R Photo 10

    The navigation of the Eken H8R camera is intuitive and easy to understand.  It’s divided into two parts: a quick modes part that can be reached just by pressing the “mode” button; and the settings part, where you change all the settings of the camera from the format to the Time lapse. Let me show you these parts:

    Video Quality

    The Eken H8R can record videos in 1080p @30 and 60FPS, 2.7K @30FPS and 4K @30fps.  The reason it can’t record videos at 720p is a mystery. Before anything else let me warn you that the sensor of this camera is not a real Sony sensor but a fake and is not able to record videos at 4K – the 4K videos are interpolated!

    (Interpolated video means that the camera invents pixels to reach a determined resolution but obviously it’s false.)  Moreover the 4K doesn’t really record at 30fps but only 15fps at a double frame rate.  In other words the frames are not 1,2,3,4,5….28,29,30 but 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5…13,13,14,14,15,15.  On the other hand the 2.7K works fine.

    The video quality of the Eken is not what I expected. The colors are quite good, maybe too saturated but still true to life, but the sharpness is near zero. As you can see with this screenshot, it’s impossible to read the license plate of the car on front of me even though it’s only 4 to 5 meters distant. I think the compression algorithm is the problem because the photos look great as I’ll show you later.

    Videos recorded by the Eken are really bad. Also it has no Gyro stabilization – you can see every movement. As you can see in this video there is a lot of shaking.  It’s partly my doing but you can compare the video below with the Amkov 7000S.

    I spent a lot of time with the Eken as a dash camera and noticed that it’s a little bit slow adjusting to a change of brightness.  For example when you exit from a tunnel it takes 2 to 3 seconds before it resets to the best exposure. In backlight conditions it works very well, but in the dark it’s not the best.  In fact as you can see in these videos, there isn’t enough viewing distance to understand what’s going on around you. It’s a little bit better with a fully lit road.

    Let me say a couple words about the VR 360 Mode. Why the hell does it exist? No really, it’s just a horrible mode that records videos in 4:4 with a strange resolution (1440×1440) at 30FPS.  The vertical angle of view is noticeably greater than a normal video but that’s it. I leave you with two comparison frames.

    Photo Quality

    As I said before the photos look great.  It’s strange to make good photos with an action camera because they’re made more for video recording. I compared the Eken’s photos with those of my smartphone and the Eken’s look better! All these photos are 12MP (real 12MP, not interpolated).

    As you can see in this photo the resolution and sharpness are very very good.  You can easily zoom in without losing too much detail.

    This photo was made in a complete back-light condition and it looks great.

    These two photos are made in full light condition.  The colors might lack a bit of saturation.  I noticed that in this condition there is a strange white “veil” all over the photos – like a light haze or fog – possibly a reflection on the lens.

    I really love how this camera works shooting photos.

    Audio Quality

    The audio of a camera is no less important than the video because without good audio even a beautiful video falls flat. The audio of the Eken at low-medium volume is quite good but with a medium-high volume it starts to distort hugely making the camera unusable.

    In general the camera captures mostly low frequencies but it misses high frequencies.  This problems is annoying if you want to record a conversation. These three videos are with a low, medium-high and very high volume:

    And this is what can you hear in a normal restaurant.  There’s too much low frequency and you can’t hear my order being taken even though I was next to the camera.

    Battery and Memory Performance

    These are the results of my battery test:

    • 4K – 106 Minutes (46Gb)
    • 2.7K – 91 Minutes (37Gb)
    • 1080p 60FPS – 81 Minutes (13Gb)
    • 1080p 30 FPS – 92 Minutes (9Gb)

    Recharging Time – I don’t know exactly how much time it takes because the Eken has no recharging indicator, probably it’s about 1-1/2 hours.

    Note that the camera can read a maximum 32GB SD card but no larger. I don’t know why Eken made the decision to limit the maximum card size to 32GB.  Personally I think it’s stupid.

    WiFi and Remote Control

    The Eken H8R like a lot of other cameras has WiFi (with its own app for Android and iOS) and a Wrist Remote Control. I must say that this is the best WiFi connection in a camera I’ve ever had. The Wifi and app are completely perfect!  It has good range, about 3 to 4  meters, and the app is very stable – it never crashed. The app looks like this:

    There’s little lag and the app reacts quickly when you touch your smartphone screen.

    The remote control is the same as the app – it’s impeccable! Every click results in quick action.

    Summary

    The Eken H8R has great WiFi and remote control connections and an incredible amount of accessories.  It also has good battery life for a double screen camera.  It can shoot really good photos with great details but it misses the main point of an action camera: the videos.

    The sham claim of 4K at 30fps, the lack of gyro stabilization and the complete absence of details in its videos all mean it misses the mark. You can buy it for about $80 to $100 (around 71€ to 89€) but honestly for this amount of money you can buy something better.
