Best 3D Pens For Printing – Top 5 Picks To Consider

    a girl using a 3d pens

In the past few years, there has been a rise in consumer 3D printing, and one of the best and easiest ways to get into the 3D printing hobby is with a 3D pen. A 3D pen is a pen that is able to print in three dimensions. You can imagine the world as your canvas as you design objects with this type of product. Unlike 3D printers, 3D pens allow for freehand design, so there is no need for any knowledge of 3D modeling software when getting started. This type of pen works similarly to a glue gun; however, instead of sticks of glue, these pens use colored sticks of plastic, and the pen has a much smaller tip. When using the pen, you simply “draw” and allow your sculptures to stand freely on their own.

    Image Via Flickr

If you are interested in getting started in the 3D printing hobby, 3D pens are great devices with which you can dip your toe and gauge interest before springing for a full-fledged 3D printer. There is a lot of information to take in for newcomers, but if you follow these few tips in our buyer’s guide, your purchase of a 3D pen will be smooth and painless.

    • Make a budget for yourself. While most 3D pens are relatively inexpensive, setting a threshold for your purchase can help narrow down your options to find the perfect 3D pen for you.
    • Find features that you want, and features that you don’t. If there are features in the 3D pen that you don’t believe are necessary for your uses, this can further help you to narrow down the choices of 3D pens. Additionally, eliminating models that include features that you find superfluous can keep your cost low.
    • Seek feedback from customers who have already purchased the 3D pen. Read both positive and negative reviews left by people who already own the product. This can help you to gain a balanced viewpoint and a clear understanding of how you might like the product.
    • If you are new to the hobby, be sure to remember that you need filament for the 3D pen to be fully operable. Some 3D Pen kits include multiple filaments in a bundle that allow you to start doodling in three dimensions right away. Keep this in mind when purchasing, as you may need to purchase filaments separately.

  • Hey+ B1800 Smart Bracelet International Edition

Hey+ B1800 Smart Bracelet International Edition

Since the famous Fit-bit band smart bracelet arrived there have been a lot of competition, especially in china. And thankfully the power of the internet gives us access to these products. The Hey+ B1800 is much better than the Q13 which I wouldn’t recommend. The smart bracelet has some great features such as a heart rate monitor, alarms and my favorite the ability to customize your watch face with your own photos. The included ones are nice, but a smart bracelet needs to be customizable for my liking. The AMOLED touch screen is clear and responsive. Not too responsive like others I have tried. It’s a nice watch which is comfortable on my wrist with an ok accompanying android app (iOS Untested). I say ok because it isn’t fully translated but the parts that are can easily be understood.

    Unboxing the Smart Bracelet

The B1800 comes in a nice looking box that you can tell was designed with care. It has a simplistic design with a nice presentation of the band when you open it. Lifting the top layer with the little tab shows a small box with the charge cable.

Hey+ B1800 Smart Bracelet International Edition

    Design and Build quality

The smart bracelet B1800 band has a soft rubbery feel. The band is made TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane) and not the plastic that cracks from constant bends. The display pops out so you can place it into a different color band which you can buy on ebay.

The band has plenty of holes to fit a range of different size wrists. Mine being pretty thin. The pin that fits into the hole fits very snug and does not feel like it will come undone while you sleep and during exercise.

One thing I like about this band is the touch screen isn’t super sensitive. You wouldn’t think that should be a problem but I had one band that changed by the static in my shirts and blankets. I would wake to find the watch settings and face changed.

The lock screen has 6  built in background images with a time layout you can’t change. They all look ok but when it comes to a smart watch I expect to create my own.

The position of the time, date and data limits your custom dial options. Here are some of mine. I just wish I could save more than one custom face at a time so I don’t have to recreate them every time I wish to change it.

    Functions of the smart Bracelet

Functions you expect from a smart bracelet are usually simple things like the pedometer, phone notification and now heart rate sensor. The Hey+ B1800 comes with that and many more cool features.

The watch has plenty of data you can view at a glance without having to go to your phone to see your steps, heart rate and more. In fact one of the main apps is called Data. It tells you your steps, calories, distance, heart rate and sedentary. Until now I had no idea what sedentary was. It means time sitting or inactive.

It also has features such as exercise monitoring and recording. Such as Running, Treadmill, Riding and even Free training (weight lifting). Because I’m disabled I can’t use many of those features. I can use the pedometer and a bit of riding but not much else.

When you start an exercise function such as running you get a 3 second countdown which I’m not sure is useful. It uses your phones GPS location to track speed and distance.

You get data as you exercise so you can see how far you have gone. That could be a bad thing for some. Haha. Here is a sample of the data it offers.

During your exercise it gives you the option to pause or finish. And when you are done it gives you a summary or it tells you your exercise was too short to record.

    Buy on GearBest

This smart bracelet band has many features which are great for people like me that should track this information and set goals for myself. With heart issues it is good to have the heart rate monitor to record and share with my doctor.

Being the “International” version though isn’t very internationally friendly if you wish to use the weather app. It does not support cities outside of China. And much of the help section is not translated.

I contacted the company through an email address I found in the app but I didn’t get much of a response. Here is their response when I asked them to update the weather to include more cities. “Ok, this part has not been updated yet, and it will need to be updated later. Thank you very much for your feedback and wish you a happy life.

Alarms are very handy if you are one of the rare people like me that doesn’t keep their phone in their hand 24/7. It vibrates pretty well but doesn’t beep. You can set one time alarms as well as daily or weekly alarms. I just wish they would link it to my phones alarms which I have setup for reminders. As an application developer, I wish it was open source so I could add all the features I want. When you select the alarm app on the watch it tells you to add them through the phone application of there are no alarms set. When there are alarms it lets you flip through them and turn them on or off.

The Alipay app I’m assuming is a china pay service like Apple pay.

The last app is the setting which has the about info as well as brightness settings.

Two very cool features which I love is the NFC (near field communication)and the Passcard feature. This supposedly lets you scan your works door card to let you replace it with your watch. I’m not sure if it works because I don’t have one to try. Although you would think your work cards would be pretty secure and hard to copy.

The other feature which will be great for my kids is, find my phone. It sounds an alarm on your phone to help you find it.

The charge cable feels well built and holds the band firmly in place. It also has a guide to be sure the pins connect to the charge points. The sensor for measuring heart rates are located on the bottom with the charge points.

    App

The smart bracelet watch connects to your phone with Bluetooth 4.2. And hanging the face is quick. The application is full of features but they are all over the place. For instance the top left brings a side menu with Account profile settings and about information. It also has setting in the top right which houses the watch information and in the bottom right it has an Assistance icon which is again info like frequently asked questions.  They should be placed together in the left menu bar.

Translation makes many of the app functions questionable. What is Transport card for? It would help if the help section wasn’t in Chinese.

Door card I assume, the NFC part which is cool but I don’t know how the security part works.

The app is where you can view all your data with pretty charts and graphs. Which is missing the option to export the data. I would build in an option to export to CSV.

You use the app to also set alarms, exercise goals and notifications. Any app on your phone that has notifications can be used to send to the watch, which is a must have feature.

The custom dial interface is simple enough to use. Select a style and chose a background. That is it. You also have the option to share your watch face but that seems pointless. The efforts spent on that feature would have been better spent on something like exporting the data or saving multiple faces.

    Smart Bracelet Final Summary:

The Hey+ B1800 is very smart band. In time, I’m sure it will be more advanced ranking in one of the top smart bracelets category. Not being a doctor I can’t say how accurate the sensor is. The other features alone are well worth the price. The Apple smartwatch came out with less and cost many times more.

    H96 pro plus: Accessories

This tv box comes with only a few essential accessories:

    • Smart Box
    • Charger
    • Remote Controller
    • HDMI cable

I want to warn you that the remote controller is one of the most common controllers on the market, and for this reason there is a possibility to have other controllers compatible with its frequencies. By the way, the range is good. I didn’t have any problems to change film from 6 meter distance.

    H96 tv remote

    Design

The design and the build quality are really great. I noticed that it is perfectly cooled and doesn’t warm up during 4K video reproduction, not even when you play games. It has only one LED on the front that shows if it’s turned on or not.

The tv box is provided with a lot of connecting possibilities.

    • Power Port
    • AV
    • HDMI Port
    • SPDIF
    • Ethernet port

Inside the tv box there are other two types of connections. The Bluetooth 4.1 with a great range, with this Bluetooth you can connect an external keyboard to improve the mobility around the menus.  The WiFi, with its 5G frequency can also handle the high speed of an optic fiber.

    H96 pro plus: Menu

As I said at the beginning of the review, the tv box has Android 7.1 as its OS. It means you will find every settings like on your android phone.

The main page is very intuitive:

It comes with Google Play, Youtube, Netflix, and Kody already pre-installed.

Behaving like your phone, the app store is the same too – and then you have the entire range of apps available.

    H96 pro plus: Performance

Honestly, I am amazed by the performance of  this little tv box. I can’t hide my initial skepticism about it, but I could’ve not been more wrong.

I tried a benchmark and it went great!

But the most important thing – how about the movies?

I know, through this video you can’t understand the quality, but I can tell you the quality and mostly the fluidity is just perfect. It has no lags nor delays; neither with the audio. It’s simply perfect!

I found just a little problem with a particular resolution. I have an old 45″ with a resolution of 1080I (and not 1080P) and this format creates a few problems because all the edges of the screen are cropped. This means all the margins of the screen are simply out of it which sometimes makes it impossible to navigate. A part this particularity, it perfect in every other aspect.

    H96 pro plus: Final Review

I think H96 pro plus is a great tv box. With its impressive hardware, it manages almost everything without any problem, it is fluid, fast, and it never slows down in any condition. It is a pity there is no USB 3.0 and I advise you to get a keyboard and a mouse – at least for the first steps – but then, you can also navigate only with the controller.

It’s not that I don’t have enough knives at home, including some perfectly and specifically used in my diving forays, but frankly, I simply had to have the one I’m presenting today.

It is offered as a single piece multi purpose blade, more precisely as an Outdoor Survival Scaling Knife with either flat or a serrated blade, and it can be found at for mere $6.65 . For that money it will even arrive to your address by Free International Shipping, to boot!

This is a small review since there are only three pieces to see, so let it be short’n’sweet.

    Sheated blade, with paracord-wrapped handle

Here are some general data to support the images which usually tell quite a lot:

    Material: Stainless Steel

    Product weight: 0.067 kg,

    Package weight: 0.110 kg

    Product size: (L  x H x W): 18.80 x 2.60 x 0.40 cm / 7.4 x 1.02 x 0.16 inches

    Package size: (L  x H x W): 19.80 x 4.00 x 1.00 cm / 7.8 x 1.57 x 0.39 inches

Package Contents: 1 FURA Fish Spear, 1 Sheath, 1 m Paracord

As mentioned before, I chose a straight-sharpened blade instead of a serrated one, because I’m more used to such edges. Since I sharpen my blades myself, maintaining a flat edge is somewhat easier. I also picked a black finish instead of metallic one to reduce shine and glittering which might influence fish behavior. For photographic reasons I want to be as unconspicious in water as can be.

However, tastes and purposes will vary, and you might well feel differently. In both cases I’m happy with the tool material. It seems to hold the edge well, and its thickness makes it very sturdy. The blade is honed razor-sharp and ready for use right out of the package.

    Plain, simple and purposeful shape

The sharp end, which is roughly 1/3rd of the total product length, comes enclosed in Kydex sheath. It is a folded piece of thermally formed plastic that follows the blade shape. Two indentations in the sheath opening lock into the finger groove (which could also be regarded as a harpoon barb). The elasticity of the Kydex holds the sheath firmly over the blade.

The sheath has three shoelace-type rivets meant for fixing it in whichever way one decides, and a length of paracord-like cord tightly passes through those. There are another similar five holes on the knife / harpoon itself: two on the handle end, and three in the blade, for optional variations in the ways the product could be used.

For my kind of diving and snorkeling I have decided to wrap the paracord around the relatively thin handle part, so as to be able to hold it more firmly. I also used the surplus length of the cord to secure the Kydex sheath, and in the same way form a closed loop which allows me to fix the sheathed blade to / through / around my swimwear. By releasing the sheath off the blade, the loop opens and the blade is free to use. Sheer simplicity.

Black anodized and stainless, it comes with a razor-sharp edge

Alternatively, one can form the paracord end into a wrist strap, and secure the sheath in some other fashion. For snorkeling, the best place for any kind of knife would be the forearm (handle end close to your wrist), so as to be in the field of view for unsheathing and returning.

For SCUBA diving, the best place is the inner side of the lower leg (handle tip close to the knee), because it can be reached by either hand (!), and also less likely to snag into anything underwater – as opposed to being worn on the outside of the leg.

An exception to that would perhaps be the cave diving, where you want to have the blade handy in tight places – thus, the forearm. Small things can sometimes make big difference!

I’ll be using it underwater, so as to have a super-sharp tool for removal of torn-off pieces of fishing nets. These net pieces go on killing fish and crustaceans until taken out of water! I also want to be able to efficiently cut myself or my camera free from a possible entanglement, should such need arise.

What I won’t use it for is a weapon, since a knife is simply a tool. Those who think they can attack or defend themselves from dangerous marine life with any knife… better think again. It is way more likely to get seriously hurt in the process. Slashing open of sharks or moray eels happens only in Hollywood movies, where the beasts are just spongy rubber toys. Weight-compared, real fishes are immensely stronger than us.

Combine the paracord, sheath and knife any way you need.

And that’s about it. This simple, practical , and excellently made tool can be used in so many ways that it would be illusory to try and cover all among its possible applications! Some folks might think car, mountaineering, camping, fishing, hunt, EDC… and even to fix your camera, by means of adding an attachment accessory piece to its handletop. This kiridashi-like blade suggests its practical sides all by itself.

Use your blades responsibly, keep’em well honed and maintained – and be safe!

  • CREE T02 XML LED Flashlight Review

CREE T02 XML LED Flashlight Review

Recently I realized that I’ve been good, so I awarded myself with an underwater flashlight!

I was looking for such light for a long time, since I need to visit my lake in the night hours to see what kind of life can be found prowling about. It is a well-known fact that sea life during the night differs a lot from the daylight scene. I’d like to see if that also holds true for the lake.

When you go looking for something as simple as an underwater flashlight, your first realize that the sheer size of choice is stunning. So I searched among literally hundreds of similar models, browsing many sites and reading all the characteristics, all the while comparing the prices with performance. Internet is grand, but can also be tiring.

The model I finally picked combined all the factors that are relevant, at least to me: solid waterproofing, strong light output, ability to withstand rough handling, power cell options and availability, simplicity in design and usage, and of course, the price.

    My choice?

What I finally decided upon is the CREE T02 XML LED Flashlight – L2 5000K 1000Lm that I have acquired from. It is (supposed to be, but not tested yet) waterproof down to 100 meters, or 328 feet. It cost me $11.66 with no add-ons, and that includes free shipping.

From my point of view, I have made a good deal.

Here is where I found it, and I’m going to show you how it’s made in a moment. Let me just point out that I was looking for a searching light, as opposed to photo or video lighting. The difference is in the wideness of the lightcone the lamp can emit. For photo and video recording purposes it would have to cover the camera’s entire field of view, and this torch doesn’t manage that.

Still, it can be good for macro and close-up work, or used with another lighting as a spotlight.

    Design & Quality

The torch appears well-made. It is designed in black anodized aluminum, and has a simple, tubular shape. The diameter widens somewhat around the smooth silver reflector part, and tapers slightly at the back end. The middle and the front or the body is smooth, excepting for some sunken points around the reflector which I suppose are there more for aesthetic reasons than, say, for surface enlargement meant to optimize the lamp cooling. There is some crisscross texture in two places, to ease the opening of torch for servicing.

The torch is 13.6 centimeters long (5.35 inches), 3.35 cm of its body diameter (1.31 inches), and 3.66 cm diameter of the reflector part (1.44 inches). It has no other surface features, save the diver symbol and type of batteries it accepts, printed in white on one side. The front is sealed with the reflector port, and on the back end there is a rubber button which shields the switch. The corrugated metal ring that secures this rubber button has a raised rim around it, so the torch can’t inadvertently be bumped “On”.

There is also a small hole in that rim to which a safety wrist line is looped. The safety line has a spring-loaded adjustment bit, so the line can’t float over your hand. It can be used in a variety of ways, enabling you to use the torch in many situations like camping, around the car, or whenever you need light and free hands.

    Lamp and Reflector

At the heart of the torch is a Cree XML – L2 LED that delivers 1000 Lm flux at 5000K light temperature (~Daylight). The light cone is focused via highly polished aluminum reflector. This LED is housed within the small, sealed space, and the operating heat is conducted and dissipated by the large outside surface of the lamp / reflector case. It functions well in the air, so it functions even better underwater. For that very reason I was more in favor of an all-metal torch, since plastic materials over the years may be affected by the heat, and plastic is not nearly as effective in heat dissipation. This would be more noticeable and important when you use a torch in the air, though.

    Switch

Covered with thick, soft rubber, the button switch allows you to control the light in three ways. Press the button deeply, and the light switches On and Off. When the light is On, press it halfway and the lamp emits a weaker light, thus saving the power. Press it halfway again, and a continuous blinking signal is emitted. Very simple and effective use of a single switch!

The rubber button cover is, to my eyes, a new approach at the switch sealing solution. In my diving heydays I was more used to magnetic reed-relays that didn’t require any extra sealings. Where the mechanical switches were used, those were rotational and sealed with o-rings. But I guess the lesser pressures I’m going to expose this torch to won’t be nowhere near its declared maximum depth / pressure rating.

    Battery Options

Yet another among the nice things is the choice of power source you can use with this unit. Two types (printed on the torch) are either 26650 or 18650, which are rechargeable 3.7V batteries. These battery types are gaining more popularity, ever since incandescent bulbs were effectively replaced with LEDs. A third option comprises a package of 3 serially connected AAA type battery cells, and to that purpose there is an adapter, right within the torch. It slides into a plastic tube that adapts the diameter of the package to the inner volume of the torch. To use the xx650 type batteries, just remove the adapter.

UPDATE: In the meantime I have replaced the adapter and triple-AAA “throwaway” batteries for 18650 cells. An “intellicharger” like Nitecore NEW i2 is one critical item for charging the Li-ions, too. It analyses the battery state and optimises the charging program individually for each cell, which is important for Li-ion batteries known to develop various problems if charged improperly. The i2 in its name means it can charge two cells; there are models that can charge more cells at the same time. On the practical side, it can charge from 100-240VAC (50/60Hz) and also from the car battery (9-12VDC) via the optional car lighter plug.

This charger can recognize and safely handle great variety of rechargeable battery types (IMR, Li-ion, Ni-MH, Ni-Cd and LiFePO4) and sizes (AA, AAA, AAAA, C and D, also the new sizes from 10340 thru 26650).

Assuming you are already familiar with the usual A, C, and D sizes, let me just mention how the new numerical descripts relate to battery size. The first two numbers reveal the battery diameter in milimeters, the next two denote its length, while the 0 on the end means the battery is cylindrical in form. So, an 14430 battery has a 14mm diameter, its length is 43mm, and it is cylindrical (round like 0 in cross-cut).

If you plan to use the torch somewhere where there is no recharging outlet available, just take along sufficient quantity of single-use AAAs and you’ll be fine. Those were once called “throwaway” batteries, but we know better now – so please always dispose of the used cells in a responsible manner!

    Specifications

Omitted in the Specs is the 18650 battery type; but it is marked on the torch, anyway.

    Summary

I’m happy with what I have received for less than $12, and the feeling did not wane after I have inspected and tested this product! For now (which means winter in my parts) the water is too cold for me to test it under the surface, but I’ll surely update this review when I do.
The manufacture is neat and from what I see, this torch will work well underwater. All the sealing elements are sound; these will need usual care and maintenance (see more about it here), but that is normal procedure with all the water-going tech that we use.

So far I am using the torch in everyday life and it works as intended. Isn’t that the best one can expect? I’ll conclude with clear and unequivocal recommendation:

This is one well-made, affordable product!
