Generic Cube 360° Action Camera Review

The particular camera I’ll be testing this time is the Cube 360, made by unknown manufacturer. 360° in cameras name might trick you into thinking this camera records true 360° video . Well, it certainly tricked me. As much as I wanted a 360 degrees camera for little over 70$, it was too good to be truth.

So this camera doesn’t allow you to record behind. Rather it means it has no dead angle in front of you so it captures images in a circular shape more or less like our eyes, not like other cameras with the classic rectangular shape.

Well, it might sound a bit confusing, but after going through the review and watching few videos I made, you’ll understand how it works.

    So let’s see it!

Cube 360 camera made by unknown brand.
Cube 360 camera made by unknown brand does not record true 360 degrees videos

    Specifications

The Cube 360 is one of the few 360° cameras on the market but the dimensions are typical for this kind of camera (L x W x H) : 4.20cm x 4.20cm x 4.80cm / 1.65in x 1.65in x 1.89in.  It can shoot videos with an angle of 360° x 190° at 30fps.  The following are the full specifications:

    Box and Accessories

The box arrived without any damage.  It’s made out of a rigid cardboard and was filled with plenty of accessories.  Like many other generic Chinese cameras it’s difficult to figure out the brand name.

There’s no brand name on the box or the camera.  On the website the information is very scarce but it seems to be a Soocoo brand camera. However since there is no brand on the camera, we have to classify it as a generic brand.

    Inside the box you’ll find:

    • 1x 360 Degree Action Camera
    • 1x Bike Handlebar Holder
    • 2x Flat Surface Base + 3M Sticker
    • 1x USB cable
    • 1x 1/4 Inch Adapter
    • 1x Tripod Adapter
    • 1x Short Connector + Short Screw
    • 1x Long Connector + Short Screw
    • 2x Velcro Fixing Belt
    • 1x Chinese/English Manual

The accessories are compatible with GoPro or SJCAM accessories and allow the camera to be used in most situations except in one. The Cube 360 can’t be used in the water because there is no waterproof case available for the camera.

The mounts seems to be too rigid and aren’t perfectly matched.  If you try to put two mounts together and turn the tightening screw too hard then at stress points the plastic turns white and eventually breaks. In fact one mount arrived broken in just such a way as you can see in the photo.

It’s disappointing that there is only one method to mount the camera with all the other accessories.  This is the mount:

Without this mount you can’t use the accessories because this camera has ONLY the screw mount on it.

    Unboxing

If you’re curious you can have a look at this unboxing video I made:

    Camera Design

Unique design is one of a few things that are good about the camera. You can think of the Cube 360 as a cube with a big eye on the top!  It looks quite appealing but its built quality is not on a highest level. If it’s shaken then you can hear some parts moving inside, which was a bit awkward.

It has a very simple design with a minimal number of buttons and ports. In the next two photos you can see an overview of all buttons.

Cube 360 WiFi 360 Degree Wide Angle Action Camera buttons 1

Cube 360 WiFi 360 Degree Wide Angle Action Camera buttons 2

    1. Power On/Off
    2. Wifi On/Off

    5. Micro-USB port
    6. Reset Button
    7. Recording Indicator
    8. Lens
    9. Mic
    10. Screw Mount

The plastic made buttons are mounted very poorly.  When you press one, it moves in about every direction. You can’t be sure if the camera did what you wanted because there’s no “click” sound feedback. Luckily there’s a little LED light behind the power and WiFi buttons (a red light for power and a blue light for WiFi) which indicates certain action.

Cube 360 WiFi 360 Degree Wide Angle Action Camera buttons 3

The recording indicator is a dim LED.  Not only is it hard to see in bright conditions but worse still it’s the only indicator and it’s located on the front of the camera.  If you’re behind the camera you can’t see if it’s recording or not.

Perhaps the most ridiculous thing that happened in my tests is that the USB port can be used only for charging the battery and NOT to transfer files to your computer! It’s absolutely unbelievable that you have to to install and remove the SD card every time you want see a video made by the camera.

    Navigation and Usage

The Cube 360 WiFi action camera has no LCD screen, which means you can adjust settings only by using a WiFi app about which I will talk in a moment. It’s operation and navigation is quite sample. You can only turn it on or off, switch the WiFi on or off  and record videos.

    Video Quality

Most important question, how is the Cube 360’s video quality?

The first thing you notice is the super wide view angle.  It’s comparable to our eyes (maybe a little bit less).  The second thing is the strange shape of the video because it isn’t the classic rectangular 16:9 with a wide view on the lateral edges and something less on the vertical edges.  Instead it’s like a fish-eye where you have a complete view all around in a circular shape with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

It also seems like the lens is in a long tube. This particular resolution and the big distortion can actually cause you nausea and headaches, mostly with videos having particular motions like this on the bike:

You can also see the very low bitrate of the camera in this video.  The low bitrate produces giant pixels (I assure you this isn’t a Youtube problem) so if you want use this camera in a situation with lots of motion, this is the result.

In normal situations the camera is a little bit better but don’t expect a normal action camera: because the resolution is low and the angle is wide, the details are almost zero.

    https://youtu.be/eqzqW3KJ1L8

The colors are quite good and true-to-life.  At night the camera allows you to see what’s around you as seen in this video.  I used it as dashcam and it looks good.

During the day when there is alternating shadows and sun the camera is crap.  When it’s in direct sunlight it’s all right but when it’s in the shade with light around it it becomes completely unusable.

The video ends up completely white as you can see in this video.  The camera is in the shadow of my car but beyond it’s so sunny that it’s like I’m ascending towards the light in heaven!

In this video notice the difference between being in full light and being under the shadow of the trees at 0:51.

    Video Resolution

This camera can shot videos in just one resolution:

    • 1280 x 1024 @30fps (incorrectly stated as 28fps)

There are four different preview modes:

    • Hemispherical Mode
    • Cirular Mode
    • Segmentation Mode
    • Panorama Mode

But these are just preview modes.  It’s actually not possible to record videos in these modes. (I’ll have more on this topic later.)

    Photo Quality

The Cube 360 doesn’t take photos!  I’m not kidding, this camera doesn’t take photos – it just takes a screenshot.  A screenshot?  Yes, because to “shoot photos” you must use the app on your phone as there are no shot buttons on the camera.  Photos consist of a shot of the screen with the resolution being the same as the video (1280 x 1024).

Cube 360 WiFi 360 Degree Wide Angle Action Camera sample 1

    Photo 9 360 camera sample

The hilarious (or embarrassing) thing about this method is that the photos are saved not in the camera’s memory but in the phone!  It’s absolutely crazy!  Luckily the photos occupy only 100Kb (which again shows how low-quality these exported video frames are)

    Audio Quality

The audio quality of the Cube 360 is on par with the rest of the camera. The sensitivity of the mic is very low.  To understand how low, watch the dash cam videos above again.  I swear I had my radio on!  Did you head it?  I think not.  For a good comparison see my reviews of the AEE MD10 or the Amkov AMK7000S.  My car radio was playing at the same volume.

Given this strange sensitivity I expected classic distortion at high volume but it wasn’t so.  This is a series of videos made in my car. The app was not well set but in the first one volume is less than a normal talking, in the second it’s hard to hear a conversation and in the last one you can’t hear yourself.

You can also listen to some street artists in this video.

This camera can’t record low volumes so don’t expect it to record a conversation.

    Battery Performance and Memory

Like other cameras without a screen the Cube 360 has good battery life.  The battery life is also helped by the quite low resolution and poor processor. There’s no battery status indicator.

    The results are:

    • 1280×1024 – 183 minutes (WiFi off)
    • 1280×1024 – 91 minutes (WiFi on)
    • Recharging time – 135 minutes

Let me say a couple of words about the memory. With 183 minutes of video (3 hours and 3 minutes) I thought it exceeded the memory, but it wasn’t so.  Three hours of video occupies only 2.92GB!  This is possible because the resolution is low, the frame rate is no more than typical and it has a ridiculously low bit rate.  For example the Cube 360 has a bitrate of 2,500kbps, the SJCam SJ4000 has 15,000kbps and the Amkov AMK7000S has 28,000kbps.  This means that when recording motion with the cube 360 you will see huge pixels on the screen. I recommend you buy a 4GB memory card because a 32GB is a waste of money.

    WiFi and App

The Cube 360 has WiFi and the app can only be downloaded from the Soocoo website or from the back of the user manual with the QR Code. This app is the only interface between you and the camera. This is what you see with the app on:

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 1

    1. Shooting Angle or Angle of the camera (red)
    2. Shooting Mode (green)
    3. Options (blue)
    4. Shooting photos (pink)

The shooting angle is the position of the camera and it serve for the next settings.

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 2

Preview mode. In these section there are 4 preview mode. Do not confuse PREVIEW with SHOOTING. With these settings you can change ONLY the PREVIEW on the app NOT the real shooting mode, it exist one mode and it is the same of the previews videos. Then this feature is completely useless.

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 3

The 4 view mode, from the left to the right are:

    Hemispherical:

It is a zoomed view of the general view of the camera, you can move the screen and look in every direction touching and sliding on the screen.

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 4

Circular: Is the same thing of the hemispherical mode but instead of touching and slide the screen you must use the accelerometer of the phone, then you must move the phone like a mentally ill.

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 5

    Segmentation:

If you set the camera with the lens in horizontal position you will have this kind of effect

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 6

If you set the camera with the lens of vertical position you will have this kind of effect

Panorama: this is the only recording mode you can use. Doesn’t matter what view you set, the camera records everything in this mode

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 7

The third setting are the “options“:

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 8

1 In this folder there are Video/Audio playback from the camera memory and from the phone memory

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 9

    2 Options:

Setup Split Time is divided in 3,5,10,15 minutes

Lighting Frequency is divided in 50 and 60Hz

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 10

3 It is the button for Start Recording

4 It is the button to research the Wifi from the App

The last button on the app is the Shooting photo key, and obviously it serves to shoot photos.

The photos are just screenshots of the video without the graphics of the app.  They have the same resolution as the video and the files are saved in the memory of your smart device, not in the camera.

I want you to know that to make those screenshots took me about 40 minutes because the app is incredibly unstable! This is what I saw in most of the 40 minutes

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 11

    Cube 360 WiFi 360 camera App 12

I wanted to check the maximum WiFi distance but I couldn’t due to the unstable app.

    Software

Over the app, this camera offer us an incredible software. In theory his work is convert the videos from .TS to .mp4 and change the shooting mode in post production, and this is the result:

    Summary

What can I say?  The only good things about the Cube 360 are the battery life and number of accessories but nothing more.  ALL the other features, all the performance, are completely unusable or just plain useless.

First of all camera name is quite deceptive and will trick many people into thinking this is a true 360 degrees camera. While the design is quite appealing, camera is very easy to operated and lightweight, its built quality is very poor.

Furthermore, some of the accessories arrived damaged and camera does not have an LCD screen, which is something many users want. The most shocking thing is that Generic Cube 360 does not take photographs, instead it provides you with frames from video at poor 1280 x 1024 resolution.

The only reason someone wants to get this camera is to record 360º video, but since it does not do that, there is really no point in purchasing it. I’ve used this camera for a while, and honestly, I just do not think it’s worth buying it. For me this camera doesn’t pass the test.

If you are looking for a true 360º camera, currently here are some alternatives (though their price is at least 5 times the price of Cube 360º). :

However if you just need an action camera, you can take a look at bunch of action cameras we reviewed or just visit best action cameras page, where we listed best ones we tested.

  • AEE MD10 Action Camera Review

    AEE MD10 Action Camera Review

Recently I had the opportunity to review a camera from a brand I’ve never used before.  The brand is AEE and the camera is their MD10 model.  While AEE produces a wide range of action cameras, the interesting thing about the MD10 is its size: it offers the same features as other cameras but in half  the space.  Fascinated by the dimensions of this camera I thought it would make for an interesting review.

    AEE MD10 small action camera
AEE MD10 is one of the smallest action cameras.

As always let’s start with the box.

Note : You can buy AEE MD10 on | Amazon | eBay |

    The Box

The first thing I noticed was a crack on the bottom of the plastic box.  Presumably that’s the fault of the courier, not defective packaging.  But there were also a few scratches inside the box where the bezel around the camera lens scraped against it as you can see in the photo.  Hopefully it’s just an isolated case – a packaging oversight.

    My box arrived slightly damaged.
    My box arrived slightly damaged.

On the graphics printed on the box you can easily read the brand name and the camera model but nothing more – unless you can read Chinese!  I can’t believe they don’t include a European/American pamphlet with at least some English on it.

    AEE MD10 Specification

The MD10 is one of the smallest cameras on the market at 5.0cm tall, 3.3cm wide and 2.3cm deep (1.96in x 1.30in x 0.90in).  How can such a little camera shoot videos at 1080p with 30fps and 720p with 60fps?  It also has a adjustable of angle of view with an aperture of f/2.6.

    [go_pricing id=”aee_md10″]

What do you find in the box?

Inside the box you’ll find the following:

    1. 1x Camera
    2. 1x Manual (completely in Chinese)
    3. 1x Camera body mount
    4. 1x Camera body clip mount
    5. 1x power adapter (US-spec so I couldn’t use it here in Europe)
    6. 1x USB cable
    7. 1x microSD card 16GB branded J-like
    8. 1x Mini CD (On it you’ll find the digital manual entirely in Chinese and an Autorun.exe that’s in Chinese too.  I couldn’t understand any of it!)

Note: You can download the English-language manual here.

    Accessories

Unlike many other brands the AEE MD10 doesn’t include a huge number of accessories, at least not with the package version I received.  It does come with two types of body clips that seem to be of high quality – very strong and well built though the clamp’s spring closure might be a little too strong.

A separate waterproof housing good to a depth of 20m (about 66ft) is also available though it wasn’t included with the packaged version I tested.  Nor was the wireless remote control included.

    Unboxing

If you’re curious about the packaging then have a look at this unboxing video.

    Design

As I mentioned the AEE MD10 is very compact and thus different from most other action cameras.  The design is simple and effective with three buttons for recording videos, shooting photos and turning WiFi on or off plus a three-way On/VOX/Off switch.

It’s well built and seems like it should resist shocks well.  The camera clip is very tight, almost too tight, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

    AEE MD10 action camera 2

I found just one ergonomic problem: the door that covers the MicroSD card slot. What’s the problem?  It’s absolutely impossible to open with your hands because the notch is too small even for a fingernail.  You need something tiny and pointed like a needle or a toothpick.  That makes it difficult to change the SD card when you’re not at home.

    Display

The front display is very useful because it shows you essential information as pictured below.

Settings and Menu aee md10 action camera

    2. Number of recorded files / recording timer
    3. Resolution
    4. Recording mode / shooting mode

    6. WiFi
    7. Battery level

    Menu

The AEE MD10 has a series of menus and sub-menus for choosing modes and functions and setting parameters. These are displayed on the LCD screen using various combinations of icons and letters and numbers.

    Video mode selection

When you move the slide switch to On, the start screen that appears is what AEE calls the Video Mode Selection. However, this is a misnomer because this screen is used to select from various functions for both videos and photos. The icon in the upper left corner of the screen identifies which of these functions has been selected.

The first function to appear is Video Recording. You can begin recording videos from this function by pressing the Record key and stop by pressing the key again. To advance to other functions, press and hold the Record key for 3 seconds then use the Shoot key or WiFi key to scroll through the functions.

Stop scrolling when you’ve reached the desired function and press the Record key to select it. If you don’t press the Record key the function will be selected automatically after 3 seconds. Each function is identified with a specific icon.

You can choose from the following functions while in Video Mode Selection:

    Video Functions

    • Video Recording – Press the Record key to start the video recording. Press again to stop recording.
    • Video-only – Record video without audio
    • Voice Recording – Use the camera as a digital voice recorder
    • Time Lapse – Take a series of photos at timed intervals that can be played back as a video
    • Timed Recording – This is a shutter delay except after the time has been counted down it begins recording video instead of taking a photo
    • Shoot-in-Recording – Allows you to take photos during video recording.  This can be done manually or automatically at intervals set as described below in Recording Parameters.  Press the Shoot key to take photos.

    PARAMETERS SETTINGS

You can continue to scroll past all the functions in Video Mode Selection to reach Parameter Settings designated by the letter “M”.  Here you choose the settings that apply to the video and photo functions listed above.

You can also change the camera’s Basic Settings.  You select the Parameter Settings mode the same way you select Video Mode Selection functions.  After you’ve entered Parameter Settings mode you choose from the Recording Parameters, Shooting Parameters or Basic Settings submenus.  Each is identified with an icon.

The following settings can be changed in the parameter submenus as shown:

    Recording Parameters

    • Time Lapse – Set the interval for Time Lapse photos to 1, 2, 5, 10 or 30 seconds

    Buttons, Lights and Ports

The AEE MD10 has a very simple design with just three buttons and a switch.

The buttons are well made and every click is followed by a “beep” sound that confirms the click.  The menu is not especially intuitive.

You must press the Record key for 3 seconds to access it, use the Photo and WiFi keys to go up or down then press the Record key again for your selection.  It’s harder to describe than to actually operate but once you get used to it it’s actually a good concept.

    Video Quality

The video quality is quite good but could be better.  The colors are true-to-life and in general it handles changes in light well. The angle of view allows a wide perspective and while not an extreme angle it’s enough to catch all the action.

The camera works great at night and even in complete darkness you can still recognize objects when recording videos or shooting photos.  I used the camera as dashcam and had absolutely no problems even with oncoming cars’ headlights.

You might be thinking, “Ok, so is this camera perfect?”

The answer is no.  Although it has good color and light management, the sharpness is poor. At very close range it’s good but beyond a few meters the details knead into each other.  It’s not too serious but it could be better.

    Video Resolution

This camera can shoot video in the resolutions and frame rates described above in the Menu section.

    Image Quality

The AEE MD10 has a Sony Exmor R sensor with 8 megapixels. It allow you to shoot pictures at image sizes up to 3200 x 2400.  Photos suffer from the same problem as video, i.e., the details tend to knead into each other.  At least with the color accuracy you can shoot the most beautiful paints in the world!

    Here are some images.

    Audio Quality

The audio quality is good but only at a low/medium volume.  When the the volume is too high it starts to distort various frequencies. I noticed that it always records higher frequencies accurately even at high volume but lower frequencies like a drum or an electronic bass are distorted even at medium volume.

I recorded this live concert with the camera:

I recorded this video in a restaurant:

    Battery Performance

The AEE MD10 has a 1000mAh battery which gave the following results:

    • 1080p 30fps – 191 minutes
    • 720p 60fps – 163 minutes
    • WVGA 120fps – 164 minutes
    • Recharge time – 135 minutes

This camera has the best battery life I’ve ever seen! At 1080p 30fps can record more than three hours – it’s unbelievable!

Battery life is due to the frame rate and the resolution. The camera doesn’t have a color display or a high frame rate so the processor doesn’t need to work too hard.  All of this saves on power consumption.  I should clarify that the battery is incorporated, not removable. It was a little bit frustrating for me because I’m used to taking at least two batteries with me when I go for a bicycle ride.

    Memory

The camera automatically divides videos into 15-minute file segments.  It’s interesting how little memory is used for these file segments.

    • 15 minutes at 1080p 30fps – 1,40Gb
    • 15 minutes at 720p 60fps – 1Gb
    • 15 minutes at WVGA 120fps – 1Gb

The average camera’s memory space usage is about 500Mb every 5 minutes with 30fps and 1Gb every 5 minutes with 60fps. The AEE MD10 is able to beat these averages because the file compression is huge.  This is the reason why the video quality looks a little bit poor. To me a better compression algorithm would substantially improve the video quality.

    WiFi and App

Like a lot of new cameras the AEE MD10 has WiFi and an app for Android and iOS.  That in itself isn’t so special.  So why am I applauding enthusiastically?  Because the app and the WiFi combine to make one of the most stable connections I’ve ever seen on an action camera!

The app never crashed and the WiFi signal can reach 40-50m (about 131-164ft) outside when there are no obstacles in the way, i tried it with my phone because i haven’t the possibilities to try the remote controll but i think is is the same range.

Indoors it easily goes through an entire house without any problems.  Once connected to the camera you’ll have full control from your smart device.  You can change the resolution, angle of view, time lapse, video loop and more.

The only negative is that there’s a small delay of about 2 to 3 seconds between the movement of the camera and the refresh on your device.  It could be annoying for some people but personally I prefer a good connection to perfectly synchronized images.

    General Issues

One disappoint  is the number of errors in the specifications on the website.   The angle of view is actually adjustable, not 120° per the website.  The actual WiFi distance is 30-40m (as measured with my smartphone; the wireless remote should be similar) rather than the claimed 100m.

It’s hard to trust their other specification like the claimed depth of the waterproof housing?

In addition to the website there is the annoying SD card door.  It’s nearly impossible to open by hand so if you’re outdoors you need to find a small object to open it.  The other problem is the sharpness of images; it’s generally good but could be better. Finally there’s the lack of accessories in the basic package like mine.

    Summary

The AEE MD10 is a good camera, one of the smallest on the market, so you can put it wherever you want.  It has very good battery life and an incredible WiFi range, pluses that make it great to use with drones.  But despite being compact and well built it has one big problem: the price.

To me 140€ (about $159 in the US but available for less) is too much, especially without the waterproof housing and wireless remote control.

But if you have a big wallet and are searching for a little camera to clip on your belt or under the seat of your bike, this is the camera for you!

    Amkov AMK7000S Action Camera Review

After our earlier review of the Amkov AMK5000S we decided to try out another member of the family, the Amkov AMK7000S.  The primary difference between these cameras is that the AMK7000S can record videos in 4K resolution, though only at 10 fps. Bigger advantage is a remote control support and slightly improved image sensor and chipset compared to its predecessor. There isn’t much information available about this camera or the Amkov brand so let’s get started!

    General information

The box of the Amkov AMK7000S is very small. You might wonder, “where are all the accessories?”  Don’t worry, they’re all there as we’ll discover later on.

    Amkov AMK7000S action camera

Like the  previously reviewed Amkov AMK5000S there’s no brand name or model shown on the box. Why hide your own name if you have a good product?  Of course the name is on the camera and battery.

    Amkov AMK7000S specifications

The AMK7000S is a so-called 4K camera because it can record videos in 4K resolution, albeit at a slow 10fps frame rate.  It has a 170 degree angle of view and the lens has an aperture of f/2.8. It has an OmniVision OV4689  image sensor and a Sunplus 6350M chipset.

    Unboxing

If you are interested in how all these accessories look, take a look at the video below.

    Design and build quality

The design of the AMK7000S is the same as the AMK5000S.  It’s is similar to the famous GoPro Hero 3 but with the addition of a 2-inch screen.  The “A” of the Amkov name on the camera body is stamped over a transparent circle for some unknown reason.

The plastic materials seem to be of good quality and strength.  In contrast the frame mount is too small: you need to bend it almost to the breaking point to fit it around the camera body.  It has more light holes than the camera has lights and the opening for the micro USB port is so small that it’s impossible to charge the battery with the camera in the frame.

Another big problem is the waterproof case.  I noticed a little “dot” on the lens window.  I tried to clean it with a cloth but nothing happened.  Finally I realized it was a problem with the plastic as shown in these photos.

    This is the dot:

The unit we reviewed had a tiny dot defect on a waterproof housing. We were unable to confirm if this is a common defect.

Hopefully it’s only a problem with this particular camera and not a general manufacturing defect found on all AMK7000S waterproof cases.

    Update 9/19/2016

I fixed the problem with the waterproof case. As you can see in these photos below I detached all the original sponge around the backdoor because they makes too much pressure on the camera.

In fact I discovered that this was the problem of the famous “dot” in the middle of the lens. I fixed it by adding a common piece of felt on the backdoor and around the lens housing.

    LCD screen

The AMK7000S has two different screens, one on the front and one on the back.  These are known as dual-screen cameras.

    Front display

    Front screen icons indicate basics.
    Front screen icons indicate basics.

The front screen is the same as the AMK5000S. It gives you vital information like mode, remaining number of photos or recording time available, whether or not there’s an SD card installed, and the battery status.

    1. Video/Photo mode
    2. Record time remaining/number of photos remaining
    3. SD card
    4. Battery status

    Back Display

The main screen is the 2-inch display on the back of the camera and it’s bright enough to see clearly even full sunlight. You can see a live view of what you’re recording and use it to change settings or preview previously recorded videos and photos.  It also has icons and other information as follows:

Back (main) screen offers way more compared to front one. It's a 2" LCD screen.

    Buttons, lights and ports

You can see there are three – and only three – buttons.  More about that later.  Here’s a list of all the buttons, lights and ports:

amkov 7000s buttons and ports 1

    1. Shutter Button – Take photos or start/stop recording video
    2. WiFi – Button to turn on/off the WiFi; LED to indicate WiFi status
    3. Power/Mode Button – Press and hold to turn the camera on or off; press to change parameters in the Menu
    4. LCD Display –  Shows the current mode, the number of photos can you shoot and the length of videos you can record.  The left corner shows if the memory card is inserted and the right corner shows the battery status.  If the camera is connected to your PC then “USB” appears on the screen.
    5. Power on indicator –  lights up when power is on; blinks while camera is recording or when updating firmware
    6. Charging indicator
    7. Lens
    8. Record LED – Blinks when camera is recording
    9. USB port – used for charging via PC or transferring files to your computer

amkov 7000s buttons and ports 2

In general the buttons are built well and it’s hard to go wrong with their ergonomics. They have a nice “click” and are wide enough to fit your fingers.

    Menus

I hate using the menu on this camera!  While it’s generally intuitive and has a good range of options, the problem is navigating with only three buttons.  Why can’t you put another button on this camera Amkov, WHY?!  With just three buttons you can only go down with the WiFi button, select options with the shutter button and change pages with the on/off button.  But you can only change pages if you reach the bottom of the menu: this method is absolutely crazy!  Why must I click the WiFi button thirty times just to change the resolution?!

    Video quality

In the daytime video colors are true-to-life and the quality is good enough to see details from a long distance. However, this is a daytime-only camera: if you’re Batman you absolutely can’t use it! At night the camera is simply unusable – completely black. I tried it as a dash cam but I couldn’t even see the headlights of my car!

Be aware that these are just YouTube samples. Since YouTube compresses the videos, I recommend you to download raw video samples here.

    Video settings

Below are the functions that you can change in Video Mode.

    • Movie Size for selecting video resolution

    • Image stabilizer (on/off)

    • Movie Clip Time (Off/1Min/3Min/5Min)

    • Low Light Mode White balance (Auto / Daylight / Cloudy / Tungsten / Fluor H)

    • Invert mode (inverts the video 180 degrees)

    • Date stamp

    [phpzon keywords=”Amkov 7000s” num=”4″ country=”US” trackingid=”pevly0d-20″ templatename=”columns” columns=”4″]

    Video resolution

This camera can shoot videos in the following resolutions and frame rates:

    • 4K (10fps)

    • 2.7K (15fps)

    • 1080p (60fps)

    • 1080p (30fps)

    • 720p (120fps)

    • 720p (60fps)

    • VGA (240fps)

    • 720p (SlowMotion)

    • VGA (SlowMotion)

While the camera records in 4K Ultra HD (3840×2160) it only does so at 10fps – completely unusable for most people.  Since the camera has the same hardware as Eken H9, I recommend that you read the Eken H9 review to better understand resolutions that are usable and those that are only a marketing trick.

    Image quality

Like many other Chinese camera manufacturers Amkov isn’t truthful about it’s specifications. It has the OmniVision OV4689 CMOS sensor but this sensor is only 4MP, not 20MP as claimed in the technical specifications.

In fact there’s not much difference in the look of the 4MP vs 20MP photos; the 20MP photos just fill up the memory card faster because the image is interpolated. The AMK7000S can’t replace your main camera for truly high-quality photos but it does capture good quality images with natural colors.

    Battery performance

Amkov says the 3.7V lithium-ion battery in the AMK7000S offers a capacity of 1150 mAh.  Testing the battery performance yielded the following results:

    4K 10fps – 143 minutes
    2.7K 15fps – 108 minutes
    1080p 60fps – 92 minutes
    1080p 30fps – 139 minutes
    720p 120fps – 102 minutes
    720p 60fps – 111 minutes
    VGA 240fps – 143 minutes

Why the differences between settings?  There are basically two reasons.  The first is resolution – the number of pixels that form an image.   The higher the resolution the more the image processor needs to work and the more battery power is expended.

The second is the frame rate measured in frame per second (fps).  Usually videos are recorded at 25fps or 30fps.  Below this frame rate the videos seem jerky like the 10fps this camera records in 4K resolution.  It’s like flipping through a photo album.  Frame rates follow the same rule as resolution: the higher the fps, the more battery power you use.

The battery duration of this camera is actually quite good for these resolutions and frame rates. The most used combinations are 1080p 30fps and 1080p 60fps (nice for making slow-motion video) and 1-1/2 to more than 2 hours duration is very good battery life at these settings.

A completely dead battery takes a little more than four hours to recharge – definitely on the slow side.

    Remote control

In addition to WiFi the AMK7000S offers another remote control, a wristband with 2 buttons, Video and Photos. I was very excited to try this but . . . it didn’t have the desired effect. This device doesn’t need to be paired with the camera because its supposedly always connected, but it doesn’t work!

It connected maybe one in ten tries and for some mysterious reason it never worked when the camera was rotated upward.  Regardless of the distance it’s completely random and thus absolutely unreliable.

    WiFi and Amkov AMK-icam app

Like a lot of other cameras, the Amkov AMK7000S offers WiFi and an app for iOS and Android. The app allow you to see a live view from the camera. Once into the app, you can shoot videos or photos and change the resolution, exposure, video time lapse duration, white balance, date stamp and other options.

You can also change modes and review videos and photos. The problem with this camera’s WiFi is the range. It works well if the camera and your smart device stay within 50cm (about 20 inches) of each other but past this distance the video lags and becomes unstable with continuous disconnections.

While the app is structured well, is very easy to use and has all the essentials, it’s just too unstable.  You’ll need to close and re-open the app a few times to use all the functions because the crashes can sometimes cause general malfunctions.

    About 4K resolution

The Amkov AMK7000S is designated a 4K camera but there’s more than one definition of the generic term 4K.  The camera records at a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160, sometimes known as 2160p.  The Consumer Technology Association has branded this 4K Ultra HD.

This was previously known by some as Quad Full HD, or QFHD, because it doubled the 1920 x 1080 resolution typically known as HD – high definition – and maintains the 16:9 aspect ratio.  Some would say that “true 4K” is actually 4096 x 2180.

There is also digital cinema 4K with a resolution of 4096 x 1714.  Which one is right?  Who knows!  Pretty much all action cameras that call themselves 4K actually record in 3840 x 2160 so calling the AMK7000S a 4K camera is probably okay.

    Summary

I was quite happy when I ordered this camera because the technical specifications looked very good: 20MP sensor, Wifi, wristband remote control, 1080p 60fps or 720p 120fps, all for only for 120/130 euros (about US $110 to $120)!  Once it arrived though, I discovered one problem after another.

The frame mount for the camera body doesn’t fit right and blocks the micro USB port; the Wifi and app are completely unstable; the remote control is unreliable; the menu is difficult to navigate with just three buttons; and of course there’s the little “dot” – the issue with the lens window on the waterproof case.

All these problems make a basically good camera frustrating to live with.  Amkov must improve their attention to details small and large if they want the AMK7000S 4K action camera to be a hit.
