SJCAM SJ4000 is by far the most popular action camera that SJCAM produced. Do not let you its price trick you, its feature rich and better then most big-brand cameras. This post will be an ultimate review of this Chinese brand action cam.

Note : Due to problems with fake SJ4000 appearing on the market, here are some links where you can get official product.
- Buy SJ4000 on GearBest (authorized retailer)
- Buy on Amazon from SJCAM official store
The first time I heard that there is a decent under 100$ action camera, I must say I was a bit suspicious. Hearing that it was made by the fairly new company based in China… Well, I am sure you are feeling the same right now. That is why you are reading this article, right?
The SJCAM SJ4000 is a multipurpose action camera which can record video at 1080p x 30 FPS and take photographs. It is also water-resistant up to 30m when used with housing. It is action-packed with lots of additional gadgets. Camera has been released in two variants :
- Non WiFi
- WiFi version
There is no need to mention that the only difference between the two is built in WiFi. I will clarify why you might or might not need a WiFi. Since the version I bought has a built in WiFi this article will cover the SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi version. But I assure you everything said here applies to non WiFi variant as well.

Bellow is a table which shows all the specs of SJ4000 WiFi. Same specs apply for the non WiFi version, except for the WiFi mode obviously.

Design
The first thought everyone gets after seeing this action cam for the first time is : “Is this a GoPro?”
Enough said. The design is very very similar to a GoPro.
Camera dimensions are 59.3 x 41.1 x 29.3 mm. It weights approx 58g with and 44g without a battery inside.
Cam is pretty lightweight and much smaller then you expect it to be. The first time I opened the box, my first thought was “Wow, can this tiny thing really make videos?”. One thing I particularly like about it is variety of colors to chose. For the SJ4000 model, there are 7 different colors.

Video Features
Though its not a high end DSLR or expensive camcorder, SJ4000 provides fantastic video for its price which will do more then a good job for most of the users. The wide angle f= 2.99mm F= 2.8 lens enables you to capture large field of view. With this action cam you can shoot high definition video in different modes and resolutions.
Both SJ4000 and SJ4000 WiFi can record videos in the following resolutions :
- Full HD: 1920*1080P 30 fps
- 720P: 1280*720P 60/30 fps (double frame, not true 60fps,records each frame twice)
- 640 x 480P 60fps
- 848*480P 60fps
It should be mentioned that the sj4000 does not support true 60 fps, though it is mentioned in the specification. So if you really need 60 frames per second in your video, you should go with their latest SJ5000 or some other camera such as Sony AS100V. The more frames per second your camera has, the more realistic video looks. The more does not need to mean the better. All Hollywood movies have been recorded in 24 fps for instance, and most of the YouTube videos in 30 fps. All of my videos are done in 30fps as well.
Download Video and photograph samples
In the lengthy video above , you will see my entire review of this camera which includes sample footage. Since YouTube encodes videos and reduces their quality, download these sample videos I have taken to see how original non-encoded videos look.
Video quality might vary depending on monitor calibration, codec you have installed on PC and video player. My recommendation is Apple´s QuickTime player or VLC Media Player.
Video Time Lapse
While I was playing around with the camera, making videos for my YouTube channel, I realized that I haven’t upgraded firmware. Since my camera was original, I was not afraid to make an upgrade by following instructions on SJCAM website. To my surprise one of the features included in the 20150126 version is video time lapse. This option enables you to create creative videos, just like those in movies.
How SJ4000 time lapse works?
Camera has an option to set time lapse to 3, 5, 10, 30 seconds and a full minute. What does that mean? Basically this is how it works. If you select lets say 10 seconds, this means camera will capture a frame every 10 seconds. If you leave your camera for an hour (60 minutes), camera will take 6 frames per minute or in total 360 frames in hour. Lets say you are recording at 30 fps you will get 360/30 = 12 seconds of video in time lapse.
Photography Features
You probably heard that video and photo do not go well together in one device. Either its a device for photography or video-making. On rare occasions if one gadget can handle both well, its bloody expensive.
With video content becoming more important and widely used then ever before, companies are making models that can do great shoots and video at the same time. Still, if you need this camera just for a sake of taking photos, then I recommend you to go with a digital camera or a DSLR.
While taking shoots with this camera, you will be able to chose between different modes such as color, sepia or black and white. Additionally, changing white balance will make your photos look different as well, which is extremely useful if you want to make your shoots a bit warmer or colder for instance.

Photos taken with SJ4000 are not bad, but they are not fantastic either. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the resolution of the photos. Though the manufacturer claims that the highest photo res is 12mp, few other reviewers confirmed that it is definitely bellow that.
Manufacturer claims that photos can be taken in :
- -12 mp, 4000 x 3000
- -8 mp, 3264 x 2448
- -5 mp, 2560 x 1920
- -3 mp, 2048 x 1536
- -2 Megapixel, 1920 x 1080
- -1.2 Megapixel, 1280 x 720

In the reality 12mp and 8 mp photo look exactly the same as the 5mp ones. When you zoom the photo it quickly blurs and the details are not easy to spot. Bellow are few more photos I have taken with my SJ4000.

As you can see its not Nikon or Cannon, but makes decent shoots that are better an average smartphone. The photos have been resized to load faster, so I recommend you to download original unprocessed photos I have taken. (Download, do not watch them via Dropbox)

On the other hand, on my travels, I find SJ4000 quite handy because of its size and weight. It fits into my pocket, and for quick photos it did great job for me. Also you will not look like a tourist when you carry a device of this size, which decreases the possibility of being pickpocket victim abroad.
SJCAM SJ 4000 equipment
The camera comes packed with enormous amount of mounts and accessories. Here is what you get inside the box (nope, I am not exaggerating, you really get all these) :
- 1x SJ4000 camera with battery
- 1x waterproof housing
- 1x bicycle stand
- 2x base stands
- 1x clip
- 1x fixed base
- 3x switch supporters
- 1x adapter
- 2x helmet base
- 1x bandage
- 3x ribbon
- double coated adhesive tape
- 1x wire rope
- 1x data wire/usb charger
- 1x usb to AC adapter
- 1x manual
- 1x wiper

As you see the list is enormous. Some of these base, bandages and stands may be used in combination with other branded action cameras such as GoPro or Sony. Basically when you combine these, you will be able to put your action camera and create flexible stands for your bicycle, waist or car (in order to be set on a window requires additional car bracket which is sold separately). Illustration above shows how you can set up and combine accessories and mounts.
Additional (optional) equipment
Well you cant get everything with the camera. There are few gadgets that you can purchase additionally on the SJCAM website, which are not included in the box. Here is a list of additional accessories:
- car bracket
- HDMI Outlet line
- waist bandage
- car charger
Waterproof case
Both versions of SJ4000 come with a separate waterproof housing which allows your camera to go up to 30m in water making it water-resistant. I haven’t tested the camera in the deep water, since I am not particularly good at diving. I used waterproof housing under a heavy rain taking both videos and photos and my SJ4000 WiFi was completely save.
Additionally the case does not influence the quality of the video or photo significantly but it will make audio sounds really bad. Camera has an option to switch to waterproof mode, which allows better shoots under water.
Camera can be easily inserted into the housing. Buttons on the case are really hard to press which was my only problem with this piece of equipment. Though I understand that stiff pressing makes housing safer, it really is annoying sometimes that you have to use full force to turn camera on/off. That can also make your photos shaky a bit until you get used to it. One additional problem when using housing is that it reduces or in some cases completely overkill the sound quality.
If you are interested in some under water testing, check out this neat video taken in the Indian Ocean, Maldives. This one shoot in Long Beach is also worth watching.
Camera without housing is not splash or water resistant, so do not try to use it that way.
Multipurpose Action Cam
This tiny little fella is a definition of multipurpose. I am not sure why, but in addition to its indoor, outdoor and underwater purpose, you can use this camera as :
- Dash-camera (car camera)
- Web cam (for your PC, talking on Skype, etc)
- Home surveillance
Car Recorder
Probably the most useful option besides standard ones, is dash-cam option. You can use this camera to record while you are driving your car. It can be pretty useful if God forbid, you find yourself in a situation where you might need a proof for your insurance. In case you are interested in performance and quality of video, check out my YouTube review which has few minutes of recording traffic.
How to activate Dash-cam mode?
To activate SJ4000 car mode, turn on your camera. Once turned on, press the menu/power button two or three times (depending on your firmware) until you enter Settings. Press the down arrow button until you see Settings<Car Mode. Press OK button on your camera and turn car mode ON.
Web Camera
I must admit that I use my SJ4000 WiFi cam as a web camera quite a lot. It became an essential to me since it records so much better then the old Genius i300 I had. Unlike most of the web cameras out there, this one will record in really, really wind angle, so it might be difficult to get used to it at first. Camera has a built in microphone, so basically you do not need an external mic. You can talk on Skype all day long without any issues.
How to setup your SJ4000 as a PC camera?
Unlike the car mode, to activate your SJ4000 as a web cam, you only have to plugin it into your PC with a micro USB cable you received with it. Camera will then automatically turn on. On the camera screen you will see two options : mass storage and PC camera. Mass storage should be selected when you want to access videos you recorded. So, select PC camera and click OK.
If its your first time to plug it into a computer, it may take few seconds for your PC to automatically find a driver for it if you are connected to internet.
A driver is tiny software that allows your PC to recognize and communicate with your camera. For my Windows 7 it took a minute. Depending on your PC operating system, it can be only plug and play. Just make sure you are connected to the internet.
Home Burglar (Motion Detection)
In my opinion this option is something most of us do not need their action camera to do. Personally, if I needed to secure my property, I would not rely on action cameras. I would buy something far more serious. Well, it does not hurt to have additional function, right? Home burglar option enables the camera to turn on and start recording once it detects a movement.
This camera is pretty unreliable when it comes to detecting a motion. Sometimes it will record on a slightest movement and sometimes it wont detect anything even if you come really close to it. My advice, do not use it as a security camera. One idea is to use it for hunting where you can record animals when they move or yourself when skating and you need a b-roll footage.
How to turn on motion detection?
Similar to the web cam option, you can turn on the movement detection by entering Settings<Motion Detection. Select ON and press OK. Just make sure to turn it OFF when you do not need it since your action cam might turn on and drain your battery. That would be a shame, would it?
SJCAM SJ4000 battery and charger
The same battery that is in M10 and SJ5000 is also in SJ4000 camera – Li-ion rechargeable 900mAH. Approximate battery life while recording in 1080p 30 fps with WiFi off is around 100 min which is not bad at all for such camera. This means 100 minutes is the time you can get recording continuously without turning camera on/off. For my needs of taking lots of shorter 2-3 minutes videos in a day, it did the job.
However if you plan to make lots of videos and do not want to worry about battery, it is highly recommended that you buy a spare battery. You can get one on Amazon for a very decent price.
Battery can be powered (camera can be charged) via USB cable plugged into your PC, AV Cable or the car powered adapter. The fastest charging is via AV cable, but this sort of charging. I always used AV cable for charging because I did not want to wait. But USB is much safer way to charge your camera if you have the time. Sometimes you can get an awkward smell when charging this cam via AV.
Original AV charger that you get with your camera can be used for US wall plugs. However most of the sellers will ship small EU converter together with the pack. Make sure to ask them if they have one to send to you. They will do it free of charge most of the times. I got my converter without even asking since they seller saw I live in Europe.
If you prefer charging via car adapter, you´ll have to purchase, since its not included in the original package. On manufacturers site, you can get car charger + car mount for only 9.99$. If you still haven’t bought the cam and need a spare battery, SJ4000 + battery pack is good thing for you.
WiFi
In case you read this article from the top, you are already aware about two types of SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi and non-WiFi. Since I already said that the only difference between the two is built in WiFi, it is time to clarify what that means to you and what are the benefits of having WiFi in your camera.
The WiFi in your camera enables you to connect and control your camera remotely from your Android or iPhone. The range for the WiFi is around 10-20m.
In my case, since I am using my cam for taking lots of B-roll footage, having a remote control is essential. I have one SJ4000 on a tripod really high, and it would be really hard to turn it on/off by pressing button on it. In addition to remote with WiFi you can look videos or photos from your smartphone device and download it from there without a USB cable. This however means that transferring will be slower then when using a cable. To use all the WiFi functions, you need to have an app installed. Lets now talk more about the SJCAM HD app in bellow.
Free SJCAMHD APP
SJCAMHD is an official app. You might be asked to update your camera to latest firmware.
Turn on the WiFi on your smartphone. Turn the camera on and press UP arrow on the right side of the camera. Now if you done everything right, you will see orange light flashing above the OK button. LCD Screen will also show some info about WiFi. Press UP once again. You will need to enter a password to connect both devices. Password by default is 12345678 (check in settings). Now the devices are pared, enter the SJCAMHD app and click connect your camera. If you have having troubles connecting, watch this video.
The app enables you to : Control your video from a smartphone. Record, take photos, change all possible settings, import/export. Do not forget to turn off WiFi when you are not using it, as it drains the battery. Orange light flashing means WiFi is on.
Firmware
One thing you should always be careful with this camera is upgrading the firmware. Make sure to install firmware which appears only on official SJCAM website. Read the installation instruction carefully. Firmware upgrade crash can mean that you did not install it properly, the firmware does not apply to your version of camera or that your camera is not genuine one.
New software upgrade can bring improvements to your video, photo, app functions and introduce some new features (like time lapse).
On this link you can download latest firmwares for SJ4000 and SJ4000 WiFi. For now, SJCAM releases firmware updates regularly.
Best Memory card for SJCAM SJ4000?
By default, camera supports Micro SD memory cards that have capabilities no bigger than 32 GB. SJCAM recommends to use reliable, big brand MicroSD cards to get most out of your video. Believe it or not, the quality and the speed of that tiny thing card memory card can have a influence on your video. It is highly recommended to use Class 10 card.
I tried these 3 Micro SD cards, and two of them worked :
- Sony 16GB High Speed microSDHC Class 10 (worked perfectly)
- Transcend 8GB MicroSDHC Class 10 (worked perfectly)
- Sony 64GB (Did not work for obvious reason – it has 64 GB!)
Some smart guys at RC forum can help you out with making your larger size memory card working as well. There is also a list of other cards that worked well. Since I tested only these 3, I do not guarantee their suggestions will work.
If you would like to know more on memory cards and their speed, quality etc, guys at Techfunology made a nice article.
Where to buy SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi?
Weather you decided to buy a WiFi or non WiFi version, you should be aware that there are lots of fake copies of SJ4000. The reason for this is because the earliest release of the product was not patented. To learn dirty tricks on how to recognize a fake vs real read this in depth post.
Note : Due to problems with fake SJ4000 appearing on the market, here are some links where you can get official product.
- Buy SJ4000 on GearBest (authorized retailer)
- Buy on Amazon from SJCAM (official store)

SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi Review Summary

Customer Support - 5.5

7.1
Best on-budget action cam!
SJ4000 is certainly the best action camera choice for under 100$. Video quality compared to the price is fantastic. There are many additional features that will make you fall in love with this cam. Plenty of colors to chose from. It is very compact and light-weight. Waterproof up to 30m is big deal for water-sport fans. The amount of equipment it comes with is incredible, though most of them you probably wont use. Additional gadgets are pretty reasonably priced unlike other brands. So buying extra mounts, battery or stripe will be pretty cheap. Navigation is through the menu is a bit hard for non-technical persons, though recording and taking shoots works out of the box. Be aware that customer support is pretty limited , and that most of the help you can get is on online forums. Additionally there are lots of fakes produced, so you will have to do a mini research before you buy, just to make sure you purchased an original product. Audio quality is bellow expectations, especially when the waterproof case is on.
G20141101v01
I have this FW and am afraid to upgrade? My seller, Geekbuying assures me the cam is genuine? What do you know about this FW?
thx
bob
Hi Bob,
WiFi or non WiFi version? What date does it say on the firmware?
I do not remember exact FW number, but mine was from 31 October, upgraded without a single issue by following instructions on the SJCAM website. It enabled me to have time lapse, which made my day! Upgraded it yesterday to a latest FW.
wifi
Version: G20141101V01
Date: Oct 31 2014
Firm: SJCAM
I had the same firmware and upgraded without any issues Bob. Let me know if you upgrade it and how it works for you.
Thanks,Pavle. Can you give me a link or tell me which FW was successful?
Sure, you have the download link on SJCAM site.
Make sure to follow the exact instruction provided there. Good luck.
Thanks, I was worried because the site says:
“This firmware is only available for the camera which have installed firmware after 20141101.”
My FW is not *after* that but *exactly that! But if you are sure you had that, I’ll give it a go.
thx
bob
Worked!!
Thank you 🙂
Great, glad to hear that!
Happy recording Bob. 🙂
The camera doesn’t seem to have image stabilizer. I see the youtube video have quite an obvious shake and vibrations. I understand this is what it is for the price and also not comparing it to Gopro, but I hope you can include that aspect of review, afterall IS is important for videography too. thanks.
Thanks Zeyar, correct camera does not have built in video stabilizer. Shake and vibrations can be reduced by proper equipment, but built in stabilizer that can reduce wide-angle and stabilize video is probably most handy. I believe go Pro Hero 3 and previous do not have, but I am sure Sony AS1000V has it, as I used it and tested that cam as well. Thanks for the comment!
EDIT : I now saw you asked about Image stabilizer which camera has, its called anti-shake and works for photos only. If your question was about video, then you have my reply above.
Hi, I just ordered the sj4000 wifi on eBay and was just wondering if I am going to receive the camera with the newer hardware? I know you won’t really be able to answer that but I was just wondering as I saw on a few other sites that if you don’t have the newer hardware you won’t be able to upgrade to latest firmware which has time lapse, and I would really like to have that feature. Also I read that the update before that decreased the quality of the video and photo and wondered if the latest firmware fixed that? I just hope I wont regret buying a Chinese camera.
Hi Divan,
It is really hard to tell which hardware will your camera have. But do not worry, as long as it is an original camera, you will have no trouble upgrading it by following the instructions on the manufacturers site. Its easy, and since its a WiFi you will have a time lapse.
But before you do any upgrade, make sure to figure out if your camera is original, because if its not, DO NOT upgrade it since it will mess up everything. I wrote a handy guide on identifying fake camera, you can read it on this link.
I think that the stories about decreased video quality are not true at all. I have continuously been using mine, and had no issue with quality. Its a great little cam with fantastic features, so I am sure you will love it.
Hope that helps, and let me know if you need any additional help Divan!
Thanx a lot i appreciate your reply! I had been doing quite a lot if research of this little cam to make sure im not going to be dissapointed. I went through your entire review as well as your video and makes me quite possitive on my purchase! I live in SA and usually have to wait longer than a month for something on eBay. So i will get back to you as soon as i have a question!
Hi, it is said that the 60fps for the 720p recording is not true 60fps but instead double frame. Does this apply to the 480p recording as well? Because if it do apply, then doesn’t that a waste of resources (battery juice and microSD space). Unless recording in 60fps doesn’t require more battery juice and extra microSD space…
As far as I am aware, this applies only to 60FPS.
Haha thanks for the answer..but I think that’s the wrong answer..
In the above specifications:-
Full HD: 1920*1080P 30 fps
720P: 1280*720P 60/30 fps (double frame, not true 60fps,records each frame twice)
640 x 480P 60fps
848*480P 60fps
See, for the 720P, it specifically say the 60FPS is not true. But for the 6240 x 480P and 848*480P, it doesn’t say whether the 60FPS is true or not. Can you reclarify? Thanks
You can go to official site and check out specification then to be sure.
Hi i have a original SJCAM SJ 4000 WI FI but on the (photo mode) i can´t see any information status (AWB, ISO, ANTI SHAKE and etc… ) i can see just the Mp resolution, Battery . ANY IDEA ???
Is it possible to lock videos in car mode on sj4000 wifi like on sj4000? Did anyone tried?
Hi Pavle.
I have recently bought the sjcam sj4000 wifi and couldn’t connect to the wifi app, so I followed the instructions on the internet to update the firmware and it will not switch on at all, when I try to switch it on the blue light flashes slowly at first and then rapidly and finally stops flashing but the camera does not switch on.
I am worried I have installed the wrong firmware and something has gone wrong and messed with the workings of the camera.
has this happened to you or anyone that has read your review and can you help me to fix this problem or must I send it in or just buy a new camera?
thanks
Hi Ethan,
I am really sorry but I never had such problem with my cam.
Have you tried reverting to the previous firmware?
Have you used firmware and instructions on sjcam.com or from some other site?
Well if camera does not connect to the app, either its an app problem (make sure you are using SJCAMHD app) or the camera itself.
Also make sure your camera is original one, that is the most important. Here is a link on how to check that.
Fingers crossed!
Make sure you have deleted the BIN file from the memory card or it will just continually try to update the firmware.
I have a new phantom drone 2 but can’t fly with wifi on. What does a solid yellow light mean when I’m taking photos with the timer on.
Can You explain how can I see the live streaming from the cam (on VLC) when the cam is connected via USB ??
(i have the wifi model but for many reasons i can not use it)
BTW it works with a Logitech930e capturing through directshow.
Unfortunately with SJ4000 it doesn’t work.
Thanks a lot for the BIG HELP.
Bix
Sorry, I do not use my cam for live streaming ,so I can not be much help when it comes to that.
hi.. is wifi working if i used my ipad as a remote?
thanks
Sure, anything that supports app.
There is someone selling on ebay that states they are authorized to sell. they show how the put a different front on the camera but yet the pic they have up shows that it has sjcam firmware. Check out the link below. Are these guys for real?
http://116.6.105.149:88/swfupload/Pictures/DB0703/5847a0b5d6fb1ecaf877922c8f719b54.jpg
Hi Valerie,
The menu photo you shared looks OK. Just like mine. Firmwares can update over the time and change appearance.
Cool, but not all of the ad showed up as I thought it would. Try to check out this link. The reason I ask is there is a pic there that shows the SJCAM on the front of the camera but when they are done it has DBPOWER on the front
http://www.ebay.com/itm/351370973291?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
If it says DBPower than its probably a fake. First time And see these sort of cams. Everything seams okay, except for that front sign. Never seen it before.
Thanks Pavle. I had a feeling that would be the case. But I wanted another opinion
Hey dude! I think you might be the last person on the internet that can help me (lol) I’ve been trying to get the drivers for my SJ3000 (i bought it and it’s bootlooped) so when I connect it to the pc, it is not recognized and the camera does not give me the option to choose mass storage or pc cam. Was wondering if you’d be a great guy and provide a download link with the pc drivers. Also, if you know of anyway to fix this bootloop issue, I’d be very appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Sorry to disappoint João, but I do not have SJ3000 and know nothing about its drivers.
Hi, i just received my sj4000 a few days ago and i started noticing that the camera flashes from light to dark quite a lot, as if trying to figure out what the amount of exposure should be, is there any possible fix for that?
Thanx!
Do you mean when going from daylight to low-light environment, faced directly to the Sun? There is no fix for that I am afraid. Without better explanation or video sample its hard to know exactly what is the problem. Make sure to use latest firmware as well.
It flickers sometimes when just pointing the cam at one spot, then it tries to figure out the amount of exposure. I first noticed it last night when turning on camera and pointing it at one direction that it flickers and would sometimes flicker at even intervals, like it flickers exactly once every second.
I bought spare batteries for mine from eBay. I’ve notice that the original battery is fine when I take videos, but when I take videos with the spare batteries the file is not viewable. Something messes up and I cannot view the video directly from the camera or from the computer, but once again I have no issues with the original battery. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Well first time I hear about such issue. Are you sure that battery has the same capacity and is the same type as the original one? Are the pins on the battery undamaged?
Hi Pavle, I have a question about the SJ4000 wifi. When in video out mode, the SJCAM app on my smart phone will not connect to the camera. It connects fine in normal video or photo mode. Is this normal for the camera and smart phone app? I use the camera for FPV on a quadcopter and also I would like to be able to control the video record on the camera. I tried updating the software on the camera and the smart phone, but it didn’t help at all. I look forward to your response.
Hi Don, I am not into RC quad-copters, so I have never used camera that way. Its the best to look for advice on RCgroups forum or some similar. Sorry.
The AR0330 cmos chip only has a resolution of 2304(H) x 1536(V) pixels so it would be a waste of time using of 5mp in still mode.
hello? can you help me? i wanted to import pictures from sj4000 camera to iphone. tried using wifi but no pictures displayed . thanks
I use Android, sorry. I do not understand what is it that you are having problems with. You can try something like this.
Good day!
I’m a bit confused with my unit. mine is wifi version.
firmware says G20140116v01, but installed date says 16 Jan 2015.
And latest firmware G20150408V02 in SJCAM website says “This firmware is only available for the camera which have installed firmware after 20141101”
So which is which? I’ve been looking for a backup to my current firmware just in case anything goes wrong but so far I’ve no luck finding either the keywords G20140116 or 16 Jan 2015.
Also, it wasn’t clear in their website, but from what I understand, I can’t flash v02 on v01 and vice versa, right? What is the latest build of v01 then?
Hi Brian,
It seams like you have new firmware. Does your camera have a video time lapse?
I do not like giving recommendations about firmware, since its dangerous for the camera. Unless the new firmware offers additinal features or serious bug fix, I would stick with what you have unless you are willing to risk.
Try contacting the seller or sjcam, I am sure they will know this better.
Alright. I’m just annoyed with the date and the firmware version saying 2 different things (G20140116V01 but installed 16 Jan 2015) and then the SJCAM website itself isn’t clear about V02 and V01.
Yup there’s video lapse. I wish they could fix the wifi connectivity. With other action cam, when you connect to the unit while recording it will not stop whatever it is doing, with SJ4000 if you connect to it in the middle of recording it will stop.
Quick question, i know it is probably a stupid question but i want to make sure. I was very close of buying the Xiaomi Yi but i hate that you don’t have an LCD. does the LCD on the SJ4000 show what you are currently video recording?
Thank you
Hi Neo, there are no stupid questions. Feel free to ask anything. I am glad to help.
Anyway, yes, you can record and preview video at the same time with SJ4000.
Additionally by the end of the week I will publish article in which I compare Yi and SJ4000 side by side.
Thank you
The LCD and the waterproof case are the difference for me. Xiaomi doesn’t offer one and i don’t know if i want to trust a non official waterproof case.
Neo
xiaomi already released the official waterproof housing
Yes but according to GearBest they had a quality control issue and they had to stop production. Pavle, i know you will have a full review next week but which camera do you think is better? I will just use it for mainly vacation video.
Thank you again Neo
Hi. Great review. Thanks. I’ve just received a DBPOWER from Amazon. I do not believe it is a fake. On boot up it says sjcam and works fine with the app. My camera came with interval timer already in the menu. Hope this helps.
Hi Pavle,
Sorry to bother you, just to check, i bought my SJ4000 lately.
But havent been using it ever since i bought it last month.
I tried to charge it now, but after it is fully charged, when i tried to on it, it just appears with the “SJ4000” wordings and after that it blacked out again.
Any idea on how to solve this issue?
Thank you for your time, i am just asking around.
Best regards, J
Hi Josephine, first make sure you got genuine one, not a fake one. Check out this guide.
thank you for the excellent reviews. I can’t make up my mind between SJ4000 and Soocoo S60 for occasional holiday use. Which should I pick? I see quality of video and pictures looks slightly better on SJ4000 but I really like being native waterproof, the case and the remote of the S60.
Valentina, I personally like SJ4000 more, but only because native waterproof is not something I need. If you do not mind slightly inferior video (only because camera is in native case), you can go with SooCoo S60 as well. They have absolutely the same image sensor. As for gear, SooCooS60 has better and more useful gear.
Hello,
I have a problem when I run the WIFI
By phone
It seems to me: sjcam sj4000 internet unavailable
What can we do about it?
Make sure to use official app. Turn WiFi on camera. Connect to it by finding WiFi network like you do when connecting to any WiFi. Enter password. You have these steps in manual as well.
Thanks for the great review and writeup.
I’d like to use my SJ4000 primarily as a webcam or “PC Camera” mode.
However on my unit the video will “freeze” on screen whenever the camera itself is not moving. Sitting motionless on a table for instance. When the physically move the camera again it will start sending live video again.
Have you experienced this? Is there anyway to have always-on live video?
Thanks Stew, never heard of such issue.
Which operating system do you use? Windows or iOS?
Try with a different USB cable or even different usb port in your PC. Make sure to restore all settings to default.
I have been using SJ4000 as a camera for Skype as well, works flawlessly for me.
Hello Stew,
I’m sorry to tell you that it is probably some software bug, but almost nobody seems to see it, since it is an “action camera”.
The bug only happens when plugged in as a WebCam (PC Camera) and it is not the camera movement that’s important, is the image.
I don’t have an official or in-depth explanation, but it seems to be using something like “motion detection”, and only when X% of the image changes, the camera will start streaming, and stop if everything stands still. If you wave your hand in front of the camera (really close, so that most of the image changes) it will start streaming again.
I’ve tried with 3 different cameras and with different firmware versions, and the bug persists…
I hope that, as more people are aware of this problem, they might fix it…
On an SJ1000 that I used as a webcam it needed to have proper lighting for it not to freeze at anything at or above 720p. Below it it didn’t freeze even without the light..
Discovered same problem couple of months ago.
But I can’t repeat it always. I’ll try to play with the light conditions.
Have you ever filed a bug for it?
Also, have you tried to turn off/on motion detection option? I had it off in my case. But may be turning it on can help?
I forgot to mention… In my case, I’m using the standard SJ4000 with NO WiFi, but the software is basically the same, so most bugs are present.
Hi,
I´ve purchased the sj5000 wifi, i´m trying to setup the panel pc on windows but I can´t.
Could you tell me a pc windows software to use the camera from the pc by wifi start record , see videos and download videos to pc.
Thanks a lot,
L.A. Glez.
Hey, i just got my SJ today but without the logo and I read on your other page how to identify if it’s fake and mine is 100% real according to your description. Thanks.
I do have a question though, out of all the accessories in the box i am confused on what the bandages are used for? Do you tie them up together in a way and wear it on your head? Or what’s the deal with the bandages. Hope I can get an answer, thanks again.
Hi Eduardo,
Bandages are not for head. You will need a headcount for that. They are pretty useless, you can use them to tight camera to a certain object, like a tree. You can check more on SJ4000 accessories in this article.
Hi Pavle,
Just got a sj4000 everything looks original only no barcode on the box and white sticky
pads for the mounts Firmware is N20141028V01. Video is great but I have a lot of background noise in audio, would a FW update fix this ? Or do I have a good Clone ?
Hi Rob,
It’s always a good idea to have latest firmware if you are sure that your cam is original. Try turning the WiFi off if your camera is a WiFi version. In some cases WiFi can cause audio interference.
Hi Pavle,
Thanks for a terrific review!
I just ordered this cam from ebay a few days a go, and I know (I hope 🙂 it’s the real deal because the seller was comparing his cam (SJCAM and wifi printed on the front) with fake ones. I got a reminder yesterday that my cam was sent from china. And I must say that I got this cam real cheap, and I mean REAL CHEAP… Hold thight… What about 22.25 US Dollar.
It must have been something wrong with the exchange engine at ebay that day. haha
A few hours later after I got the confirmation that the cam was sent, I got a message from ebay telling me:
We had to remove this listing from the site and you’re not required to complete the transaction. If you’ve already sent payment, the sale should process as normal and you don’t have anything to worry about. If you have any questions about delivery, please check tracking or contact your seller. If you run into any trouble along the way eBay is here to help. Please visit the Resolution Center to help resolve any problems you may encounter.
Ending with: This user is no longer registered on eBay.
Ain’t I a lucky fellow? 🙂
Hi Hans,
Usually if the offer is too good to be truth, it probably is, fingers crossed you wont get scammed.
Hi. sj4000 wifi model I update the product to G20150408V2 version.
After that camera record only a single part (about 35 minutes) and stops at wifi mode.
Without wifi it records until the battery finishes.
Why it stops recording after one part. How can I fix it.
Best regards
Tuncay
Try formatting memory card and resetting to default settings. If that does not help get in touch with seller or manufacturer for technical support.
I have the same problem, no matter the card used, and no matter the firmware. Everytime that there was a new firmware, I praied for a fix, but this problem is still here. I wrote to SJcam (I don’t remember wich staff exactly) some months ago, but this issue has never been solved. I really need a fix, it is very important for me, but I think that now there is no hope. So my SJ4000 is useless for me because of that 🙁

Pavle, I was looking for a propper camera for a while. Finaly I bought SJ4000 without wifi. Satisfied. BUT, I would like to update firmware, and there are two sites – sjcamhd.com (with firmware dated 09.04.2015) and sjcam.com (so without hd in name … firmware date 18.12.2014). It could be two sites from same producer although it seems it is not same factory.
Which one should I use?
Thank you in advance
Sjcamhd is official manufacturer. Sjcam.com is their marketing partner, so you should be safe with that more recent one. Unfortunately I do not have non WiFi and cannot advice you further.
Hi Pavle,
Out of all cameras that you’ve reviewed on here, which one would you recommend for having one installed in my car as a dash cam? Can any of these start recording as soon as it gets power? I also need to know if any of these cameras can be used straight from a power source without battery?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Max,
To be honest none. They are not dash cameras, they are action cameras. They can be used as dashcam, but you have far better, more reliable options. Check this site for more info on dashcameras.
i ordered the sj5000 wifi non plus on the 3rd of July and i got confirmation of the order but no tracking number. is their shipping super slow.. has anyone experienced this sort of thing from them?
Hi, I can only get 110 degrees angle of view out of my SJ4000. I measured it very accurately with a protractor and vertical objects I brought into view from the sides. On playback, I can confirm it is 110 degrees and not 170 degrees. Does anyone know how to get it to record at 170 degrees. I have written to SJ Cam but they have not responded.
hello there,
whenever i try to take a picture in capture mode. i connect it to the phone with sjcam HD through wifi. my problem is when i try to take the picture outdoors, the picture is stuck and only after moving it vigorously it refreshes when looking through my phone and because of this it is hard to adjust when taking a picture. have you had this problem before?
I personally never had there issue. Maybe someone else can help out. I can only recommend you to make sure to update the camera and app to their latest versions (firmware). You have the instructions and files on sjcam website. Good luck.
Oh dear im having the same issue too… It freezes on taking picture mode but works ok on video. I cant even take photos thru my phone.
Hi there,
Thanks for the great review of many of the lower budget action cam.
I, myself, bought a SJ4000 (non wifi) a year ago and am liking it so far.
But after reading you review about a new firmware for the SJCAM, I quickly clicked onto your link and downloaded the newest firmware for SJ4000 (non wifi).
I followed the instruction on the offical website and updated the firmware.
But now, my OK button at the top doesn’t work anymore and my “down” button became the “start/stop” (“OK”) button.
So When I scroll in menu mode, I can only go up, but not down since the down button became “OK” button.
Does this ever happened to you? Would you happen to know a fix on this?
Would you happen to have the older firmware, so at least I can go back and have everything working again?
(I’ve tried to contact SJCAM, but no reply yet)
Thanks
Hi Jorg,
I heard of this problem quite a few times. I believe you either have a fake or you installed a wrong firmware.
Anyway, try to revert to previous firmware you used if you can.
See this link for firmware list. That is I am afraid all the advice I can give you.
Hi Pavle, your review was superb and satisfactory.
placed an order for SJ4000 WiF straight away in gear best site
Estimated delivery time is 10-25 days 🙁
Thank you!
You are welcome Arun!
Hi,
Could you advice between SJCAM 4000 and 6000? I got cheaper price for SJ6000 compare to 4000; infact SJ6000 is the upgrade version of 4000 which should be pricey than 4000 right?
SJ6000 by SJCAM does not exist yet.
Hi Pavle,
thanks. then, i guess sj6000 in the market is not under brand of sjcam. i have make my mind on which model to choose for SJCAM. 🙂
May I know that, actually is xiao mi action camera better or SJCAM Sj4000 wifi better?
Because I am plan to get either one of it. Just still confuse with which one better and want to choose which one.
Hope to get a good reply for me…
Thx a lot…
Read this for in depth comparison of the two this sjcamguides.com/xiaomi-yi-vs-sjcam-sj4000/
I bought this and every time we put in the memory card it says “card error” or “pull out disk”. We cannot for the life of us figure out what we are doing wrong. Does anyone have answers for us?
Try formatting memory card. Perhaps you are using unsupported memory card size (max 32gb). Class 10 micro SD memory cards from reputable brands are recommended.
Is it possible to control two SJ4000 with one remote app? So They both record or take a picture at the same time? Thanks
I do not think its possible to control two cameras with the same app.
Usually I use the camera in “Video Out” mode but every time I switch the camera off I have to re-set the video out option again.
Is there a way of keeping the Video Out option constantly on even after switching the camera off?
Thanks
It does not support live AV out, if this is important for you, try to think about GoPro, GitUP, Mobius.
Buy a cheap signal convertor to convert hdmi out signal to AV / Composite signal / CBVS. Available for 5.00 sterling on eBay. I purchased today from seller : “uniquepoint2014”
Hi.. i know this is common sense question but i have to be sure before buying sj4000 wifi.
Is’t word “wifi”is like bluetooth that we can transfer files, etc?No need for active internet connection for this to work?
Thank you
Yes, that’s right.
Hi! I just bought mine. Is the “down button “(bellow the wifi button) loose? Is there any chace that i can change the file format of the video to mp4?
Thank you very much for you reply!
Also, may i know whats the lates firwlmware update fo this? Thank you!
Also, may i know whats the lates firmware update fo this? Thank you!
Always check official site to check for fw updates.
There is no way to change video format, maybe in post-production, but not directly from the camera.
Thanks for the reply!
But I have a problem with the “down button” at the side. It is loose, do you think that is ok? Or should i return the it to the supplier?
I just bought the 4000 WiFi from B&H, waiting for it to be delivered. I was wondering if there was a WiFi remote similar to the GoPro WiFi remote that could operate simple functions like start/stop. I am using it on a Kayak, and hate breaking out the iPhone as i have not found a waterproof phone case that works well for me.
Do you mean a RC/Bluetooth remote? If so, then this camera does not have such remotes.
Yes, i was hoping there was a physical WiFi remote. I saw some stuff online, but there are so many FAKE SJ’s out there, it is hard to tell fact from fiction!
Greetings!
Can the WiFi version of the SJ4000 be used as a wireless webcam?
As far as I know, no. You have to connect your camera with USB cable, plugged into PC, then chose the PC Camera. There might be some other hacks, but I am not aware of them, nor I use them.
You can connect the Wi-Fi on PC, then paly the live RTSP audio on VLC.
Hi there.
I think you might be my last bit of hope, I have been trying to import my photos from my SJ4000 which I am 100% sure Is genuine to my iPad mini wth a genuine Apple lightning cable but every time I go to import the photos it just says no photos to import. I took it to the apple shop today but they couldn’t help. I have tried a few different things to see if anything makes a difference.I am using a Samsung 32 EVO micro SD card.
I can download photos using USB cable plugged into my laptop and into camera.
If I put card into Apple lightning cable it says no photos to import.
If I put card into my digital camera and take a photo it will import it to my iPad
If I put the SD card which is normally in my digital camera and put it in the SJ4000 and take a photo it will show it back on the camera but not import it to my iPad
Have you any ideas what is wrong, as I want to import photos to my iPad and not my lap . Cheers Gary
Sorry, I am not an Apple user, so I cant assist you on this one. Try downloading photos via the App. Or try to put same memory card in any other device which you normally import photos or anything else from (even MP3).
The MAC photo APP can not import the SJ4000 photo directly. But I found a very interesting thing, if I changed the folder name same as the GoPro folder name, it will allow to import the photo.
The different between GoPro and SJ4000, MAC will recognize the Gopro as a camera device, but for SJ4000, recognize as storage, I suggest use the card read adapter for SJ4000.
By the Mac photo app do you mean IPad app? I have the same problem and I don’t know how to fix it. Can you help me with more specific information? Thanks!
Gary, I have the same problem. Could you fix it? It’s driving me crazy!
Hi just bought the sj4000 non wife.
Quickly took a couple of videos with the sd card used in my phone and tried to view in my phone but just says not viewable are these formats normally viewable on a smartphone or do I need to format the sd card?
Thanks
Joe
Make sure to use class 10 card, as mentioned few times in article and few more times in comments. People mostly preview via the app on their mobile devices, but since you have a non WiFi version you cant do that. Try to find an app or find out if your phone supports video format.
Can 60 fps problem be fix via firmware upgrade ? Or Is it hardware issue ?
Its a hardware issue.
I have a question about storage on the origional sjcam sj4000 WiFi edition.
I find it very weird I have a class 10 32gb micro sd card it’s a $40 card (not a cheep one ) and it seems to film great for about the first 60 min or 7.8 gb but then any videos saved after that they seem to be corrupt I see the file on the card but when I go to open and view it I get nothing just a black screen iv tried format iv tried resetting iv even tried other cards but I keep getting the same issue any file after 7.8 gb or 60min of video or photos theres the file but nothing in it what could this problem be?
Expensive memory card means nothing. If problem persist with other cards (make sure to use class 10 from reputable brands) then its your camera problem and you would have to contact manufacturer or seller for further assistance.
Hello!
Is it possible to change the output filename format?
The “2014_0812_211323_001.MOV”like format using a timestap is ok for using in pc, however it does not follow the design rule for camera file system (DCIM ) standards. And for this reason, it can’t be recognised in some Apple devices and digital cameras storage hardware.
I assume you mean inside the camera setup? Then no. If you are programmer, or tech-savy perhaps it can be done inside the firmware. I usually change the name inside my own PC (Windows 10).
Hey! I Have a sj4000 wifi, but when i try to download the videos on my iPhone it appears “download failed” help me pls
Help me please
I do not have an iPhone, so I cant help you on this one, try contacting manufacturer.
Manufacturer said to try another app, but the camera do not connect with this app “FinalCam”
There is a new Firmware Version for SJ4000 WIFI (2015.08.11) but it doesn’t show any changelog.
Problem is when i installed it, the version still says it’s G20150408V02.
Are there any real updated firmwares for SJ4000 wifi?
Recently acquired a SJCAM SJ4000 and I must say is the best on the market with the best value for money. The delivery was delayed a bit due to delay of the supplier, but the powerplanet.com pledged to send in 24h express service so I can use the camera on my vacation!
More than recommended, it is mandatory to take into account this store before buying any product. Unbeatable prices with very good support.
I wish to use the wireless wifi on my laptop can the software for the mobile app work on my laptop?
No, its exclusive for apps on mobile devices. Perhaps there is a way, but I am not aware of desktop app for Sj4000.
Hi, I just bought an SJ4000 but I can’t seem to connect to my PC. I plug the usb cable but the only thing that happens is that it starts to charge. Nothing happens on my pc and I can’t find a menu option to open the storage. Do you know what am I doing wrong? Did you experience any difficulties like this?
Carlos,
Camera needs to be turned on, and you have to select Mass Storage or PC camera on camera screen, only then will computer detect it.
If that does not work. Try :
1. Different USB cable.
2. Make sure your camera is original one. Guide here.
3. Make sure you have the latest firmware.
I like the pictures that my SJ4000 produces but the mountings are rubbish. Most of the black plastic bits have fractured and now the lens on the front of the waterproof housing is showing small cracks. Not sure if I can get another one.
There are tons of spare parts for it on eBay, Amazon and AliExpress.
Does sjcam have pause feature – can the filming be pause and then continued to the same file?
Mika, no it does not have a pause. Only stop/start function.
Dear Pavle,
Thank you for your video, it makes me more understand on SJ4000. I still have some questions as shown below, would you please help and reply me. Thanks.
1. The cam sound is low during in playback mode & not satisfied to me, can it be solved by upgrading the firm ware in some day.
2. During recording, the movie can be locked by pushing the mode button. That means it cannot be deleted, but I don’t know how to release the lock as I would like to delete it.
1.I assume the reason they set a volume to low, is to decrease the hiss that these type of microphones make. You can boost it in post production by using video editing software easily. I guess volume can be changed in firmware, but I doubt it will be done.
2.This can depend on firmware. I have WiFi version, so for me, files can be deleted inside settings>delete or by formatting a memory card. Safest way, if you do not to delete everything, plug it into pc, chose MassStorage and delete manually what you wish, from PC.
Problem is solved!
Thank you for your advice.
Hi. I am having issues with the recording stopping after only 30-60 seconds. I was recording a live concert and thought it was maybe too much noise but even in my house it’s not recording continuously. Please help.
Thanks
JON
Hi Jon,
There are three things you can try.
1. Reset camera settings to default (maybe its motion detection enabled or loop recording).
2. Try different MicroSD memory card (at least microsd class 10 from reputable brand.
3. If the two above do not work, make sure your camera is original one by following this guide.
Hi.
So it is a legit sjcam and I reset back to the default and ended up getting a new micro sd card and that seemed to be the trick.
Thank you for the tips!
JON
Hi I was wondering if someone can tell me how to get the video I took to play on my tv and when I try to play it on the Camera or my phone it has double don’t no what I am doing wrong thanks Christina
You would need an proper HDMI cable with mini input for camera, and the one that suits your TV. I do not understand what do you mean by “it has double”.
hello need help on my sj4k. why is it when i use sjcam hd app it stuck if the distance between the sj and my phone like 40 inch (selfie mode using monopod) and also when i use finalcam it say snapshot fail….?? really need help on this..TQ

hi,
my camera has been set on tv mode. is there a way to turn the screen back on?
please help…
Try to connect it via hdmi cable to your tv and preview on TV while you change settings.
Simply switching the camera off then on again works for me…
Hi Pavle
Which is the official sj website
sjcamhd.com/ or sjcam.com/ ?
sjcamhd is manufacturer, sjcam is marketing partner.
I have just purchased a sj 4000 wi fi , i placed the sd card supplied and formatted on my pc to ex fat , it would take one photo and then come up with memory error , would not save any video either , tried a class10 toshiba card same thing , tried to reset to default and now it says please inset card and still wont take stills or video , is this a camera fault , have checked and it seems to be a genuine sj 4000 , must add before i formatted the toshiba sd it would record video and still shots , will not work with card in our out ….Help …David
Try to format the card from the camera. If that does not work, try with different card.
Did you resolve this? i have the same issue.
I bought a sj 4000 with wifi. I am going to use it to film my journey in a 30′ motorhome. What I was wondering is the wifi range good enough to reach from one end of my motorhome to the other? It hasn’t arrived yet, but I want to use it as a back up cam too. I would leave it in the back window on a suction mount pointed backwards, and turn it on when I need to see behind me. There are tons of wireless back up cams, but they are either expensive, or come with a monitor I’d have to mount up front, or are part of a license plate bracket, or something. This looked like the only solution I could live with, Plus, its an action cam.
WiFi range varies from lots of factors, but in theory its around 10m.
FYI, I am using SJ4000 WiFi with two different brand (Kingston and Sandisk) 64Gb cards without issue. The trick is to format them in FAT32. In order to do this with Windows, you will need to download a utility. I used “FAT32 Format”, worked like a charm. I have tested both cards by recording to full capacity. Videos are still broken up in 4Gb increments, can’t do anything about that.
hello again! I was looking to some sport cameras on gear best and i found a model of the sj4000 that does not have wifi and it is not sjcam, but they say that it is original, does it have the same specifications? is it as good as the sjcam sj4000?
As far as I know, Gearbest is official retailer of SJCAM products, so I assume the version they are talking about is an early batch which did not include SJCAM branding. More about it can be read in this article. If that’s the case, specs of hardware are the same. For further assistance you would have to reach out to seller.
gearbest.com/action-cameras/pp_230653.html
yeah i think it is the same but without the wifi, it says it has a novatek chip and a COMS sensor with 12 mp. but i dont think those mp are real i think it is as you explained on the sj4000 article
Hello, awesome SJ4000 review, more detailed than most, I did a pretty thorough review on my Youtube channel as well. I havw a question, I need a rear door with the sound openings for the waterproof case but it seems no one sells them. where do you suggest I look or do you sell accessories for this cam? thanks for your help, oh by the way if you like here is my YT review of the cam as well.
https://youtu.be/rAj8yQNBfgw
Hi Ray,
I did quick search, and found only waterproof one. Perhaps you can drill few holes in that one, it can be the last solution if you do not find spare one with openings. There is spare waterproof dooron Amazon, eBay, GearBest, BangGood, DealExtreme, etc. But none with holes.
I’m looking for a camera to do some stop motion filming. I’m not very good with technology stuff and usually ask my husband, but as it’s a present for him I’m a bit stuck!
How long would the battery last if using in stop motion mode? Longer than continuous filming?
Alternatively, is it possible to plug into the mains, or connect with a USB cable to charge whilst it’s photographing?
I’m looking for something that would enable a stop motion filming for several hours at a time, and just not sure whether this camera would work. Thanks
Stop motion is one thing, time lapse is another. If you need stop motion, I do not think any action camera has it. You would need something else. However if you need time lapse, then SJ4000 has such option, and it has been described in the article. This camera can record while being charged for sure. I have not done any battery test in time lapse, but from what I remember it should be indeed slightly longer.
Hi Pavle,
well I don’t know what’s going on with my SJ4000wifi.
Namely, I bought it in February 2015 with FW G20150126V01 on it but without VIDEOLAPSE mode (no such option under settings).
Tried to flash FW G20150408V02 from official link, cam does nothing, completly dead, flashed FW back to G20150126V01, cam wakes up but again without videolapse mode. WTF?
I researched for this issue across the net but nothing found. Any idea?
Thanks for great review!
You should contact manufacturer on sjcamhd and see what they suggest. I took a quick glance, at the latest FW for SJ4000 WiFi seams to be this one. Though you always should check their site to be 100% sure. I have not updated mine to this one.
Thanks Pavle,
if you have sj4000wifi also, of course, with working video lapse mode, can you please provide me a link to FW you have. I wrote to the manufacturer and now I am waiting for the answer.
Thx!
Hi Pavle,
I contacted manufacturer few times and at the latest answer from sjcamhd support team “… Confirmed from the tech team, your SJ4000 WiFi cant support video lapse function…”
Well, I definitely didn’t expect such an answer from them.
Over the whole net I couldn’t find that the single original SJCAM SJ4000 Wifi doesn’t support video lapse mode (of course, with FW upgrade).
On the contrary, the older SJ4000 Wifi models than my, can do support the video lapse mode without any problems. Does it have something to do with FW ver 1 or 2? (mine orig. FW was V1 version)
Any suggestion?
And… which FW you have now on your SJCAM and do you have working video lapse mode?
Thanks in advance,
Mario
Hi Mario, first time I hear that, but with SJCAM nothing comes as a surprise. My version is G20150126V01 dated at Jan 26 2015, haven’t updated it since. It appears that new updates bring more trouble than improvement. This site has great overview of all FW versions, so you can try if you have enough patience to see what works with yours.
Hi Pavle,
I still couldn’t solve my problem, neither with sjcam support or my dealer but I accidentally found another solution for all other people who having similar problem (missing video lapse mode). I installed on my android phone SJCAM ZONE app (ver: 0.9.7.24) from Google playstore which can be finally connected with my cam (older app and SJCAM HD app couldn’t connect over wifi).
The solution:
1. Connect your cam and SJCAM ZONE app over WIFI
2. On phone app: in settings (a wrench icon on lower right corner) scroll down to “Video Time laps set” and set desirable time (1, 2or 5 sec or more)
3. Go back to main app window and start recording…voila…it works (although in camera settings on camera there is no such option)
4. Now you can turn off WIFI on your phone (saves battery) and cam still recording in video lapse mode (’cause the WIFI on camera stays on, battery drains faster but that isn’t big problem)
Hope this helps to other people!
Mario
Thanks for this Mario, I am sure it will be helpful to others with the same/similar issue. Cheers.
Is this actioncam better than the Rollei actioncam 400 ? There is no comparison on the internet. They are very close in pricing and they both get good reviews on the internet, but which one is better?
Hi Pavle
I was wondering if the sj4000 comes with a charger that fits australian powerpoints??
Thanks
Isaac, I do not think so. You can contact your seller to see if they can ship you one that fits your powerpoints. Mine was US plug charger, but it arrived arrived with EU plug adapter.
Hi Pavle,
Great review! Thanks.
How can i transfer video’s to the micro SD CARD on my smartphone by wifi (Samsung Galaxy S5)
I try”d all kinds of things like copy the sjcam app map to sd card but an imported video creates it’s own new sjcam map in the INTERNAL memory storage.
Please advice! Thanks in advance
Hi Mike,
So your issue is that an app downloads videos into internal storage instead of the external one? Unfortunately I can not help you on this, as it is probably app developers that you should contact. I transfer my footage to PC only, do not use WiFi, as it is slow in my case.
You got the question right. Thanks anyway for replying.
Cheers
Hello!
Does the android app have a live view mode? Can you use this camera for live video feed without recording with the wifi feature? Thanks!
Yes it has.
Oh, thanks for the fast reply. One more question…I guess using the wifi live view mode decreases the battery life radically, but do you think the battery would survive approx. 60 minute in wifi live view?
I have not done such test, but I believe it be possible. You can use a power bank to have much longer battery life anyway, with WiFi or not, or have an extra spare battery. You can check out accessories post for more info.
Hello and thanks for a great review!!!
Can I charge the camera and view it over wifi at the same time?
I want to mount it to my door so that I can by wifi see who is at the door.
Thanks
Hi Sam, you can charge it and use WiFi /record at the same time. If you are only going to use it for door and stuff, you need a surveillance, not an action camera by the way.
I will use it for other things too, but i have a OK camera with diving enclosure so I don’t really need the sj4000.
Excellent explanation of the time lapse video ! thanks a lot
Love my SJCAM 4000 wifi ,can’t believe the image quality
the only problem I have is when I play the 3 min video segments in my tv connected with the mini HDMI cable it only plays one segment at he time and stops , I have to go back press forward and then play again in order to see the next video clip
is this normal or am I doing something wrong ?????
thanks again for a great tutorial and review
sincerely Dan
I do not use much HDMI, but if your camera chops the video into 3 minute sections, you should disable “loop recording” in settings.
Hi! I recently bought an SJ cam wifi, I would like to ask how do I transfer/ export video files from sj cam to my android phone.
I already click download and it was already labeled as downloaded but i can’t seem to find it in my gallery. Where can I check those videos?
I tried it with pictures and all the photos appear in the gallery.
Thanks in advance 🙂
I really do not know I believe that depends on your phone.
All SJCAM video files you can find on your android Phone after transfer. Just go to “files” (yellow icon) and search for sjcam directory. There they are. Unfortunately you will not find them in gallery.
Hi! Really good review. I just bought a SJ4000 wifi and I realized the pictures are elongated vertically, very strange and different than the image of the video. Do you know if is the configuration or if this is normal?? Thank you!
Two solutions :
1. Make sure you are holding your camera properly when taking an image and not upside down.
2. Second, in settings, make sure to have something like “Image rotate” to off.
Let me know if that works or not?
Thank you for replying! The two solutions you gave I was alredy doing…
There’s a way I can send you a photo so you can see? It’s really not what a I see in pictures from other people.
I fixed the distortion on paint, but is really annoying to fix every picture, right?!
But thanks anyway…
If you are talking about distortion (fish eye), it is normal for any wide-angle camera. I understood your photo was upside down, in that case make sure you have the original camera.
Hello… Iv just got an authentic sj4000 wifi and got a few questions.
I purchased a 64gb card (before reading the max is 32) and it records but there is no where on the unit to watch a preview or on the sjcam zone app to watch what’s been recorded? Is this due to the memory card size?
Secondly, on the app (iPhone 5s v 9.2) using the sjcam zone app I’m having some troubles…
Once I turn on the cam, then the wifi THEN select the wifi on my phone it finally shoes on my phone- great. BUT, when I turn the device off via my phone I can’t seem to be able to turn it back on via the phone app! So the main point of having it say attached to a position out of reach controlled via my phone seems to not be possible? I was under the impression you could turn it off and back on again via the phone app?
Look forward to your reply and help
Cheers, Vinnie
Vinnie, the playback problem might be due to the memory card. You can not turn camera off and on via the app, as turning it on interrupts WiFi, its not a remote control like the on you use on TV.
Thank you for the very speedy reply.
So if I have the cam set up under water attached to a pole to record fish swimming past I have to leave the cam on and record when I see the fish via wifi? I know it’s a lot cheaper but my mate just got a GoPro hero 4 and on that you can turn it on and off via the GoPro app via the wifi. — guess I was hoping to much 🙁
If by on/off you mean turning the power on or off and not start/stop recording video, than yes, you can not power camera on or off as turning it off interrupts wireless connection.
Hello, I also have a question, is there a big difference between the SJ4000 wifi plus and the SJ4000 wifi, is so, which one do you recommend, I should buy.
Thank you.
You can find comparison of SJ4000 vs SJ4000+ here.
Hi pavle. I got an sj 4000 wifi for my son for christmas and he has done some videos and downloaded them to his galaxy s3 via the app. Could you please tell me how to upload them to youtube. Like i say he has downloaded them but cant find them on his phone.
Many thanks Steve.
Steve, I can’t help you with that since that depends on phone, you can contact manufacturer of the phone or the camera.
in Dash-camera (car camera) mode the video is taken until swithed on and files will be in memory card or hung when full?
Only if you enable loop recording.
in Dash-camera (car camera) mode the video is taken until swithed on and files will be in memory card or hung when full? Thanks
Hi Pavle, I purchased the sj cam 4000 wifi and I seam to have problems playing the vidieos on my Pc. Also when I have tried to convert the files to mp4 to edit in the Gopro software they never work either.
Could you please give me any helpful advice
Many thanks
Nick
I use VLC player for windows and Quicktime for Mac, try that.
Hi Pavle, can you show your sjcam settings. or any suggestions for better quality
Brett. I use mostly all on default, but use cloudy white balance and sometimes bump exposure to +1/3.
how about for photography? image quality
Same. Just experiment, settings depend on situation, light ,etc.
How do you rate its photography?
Please read a review and take a look at a manual we made, all of your questions have been answered previously.
Additionally you have photos samples available, you can download them and judge yourself.
Hi! Sjcam with 1.5″ lcd authentic too? Or are they all 2″?
Of course. See all cameras compared for better understanding.
Thank you for this. Your review is very thorough and informative. I found answers to all the questions I have regarding this camera. Well done!
Hi, My battery was a big disappointment. 100 minutes would be amazing .
Although the battery sticker says 900 mAh, I unwrapped mine and inside the battery capacity says 750mAh ! I tested it with a balanced charger and its saying 550mAh. The ones from XCSource on Amazon claim 1100, but test at 750. – This gives me 60 minutes recording. I will upgrade the Firmware in the hope that the battery will last longer. Mine is the non WiFi version. I also have a modified case version to use a 2000-3000 battery, I will post on youtube when complete. Thanks for the review.
Make sure that you have an original camera, not a fake one. Guide here.
Hi, I was just wondering with the sjcam if you set it in 5 second timer, does it have an indicator that it is taking a picture? like blinking light or something. Mine doesn’t seem to blink when it’s taking a picture. i cant get a good shot if it’s self timer. I own the sjcam sj4000 basic btw.
Hi, my camera works well, except while recording video, the screen goes blank, after about 3. Or 5 minutes, and when I press the record button, screen comes on and starts recording again. It does this all the time ? How do I keep recording, past 5 minutes please. I do not have screen saver on, etc. Alan
Alan, try to restart all settings to default and if you have another SD card that might help. I’ve never heard of such issue, make sure you got original camera and you can also contact manufacturer to check if a firmware you are using is causing problems.
hi, I hv an original SJ4000 wifi. Two issue I encountered:
1) When it is in USB mass storage mode (usb connected between it and pc), the blue screen appears forever! unless I turn off the the camera and usb connection also goes off. Any way to turn off the blue screen with turning off the camera?
2) web cam don’t work on Win 7. Tested 2 pc, both don’t work. What is missing?
Thank you
Hi Kenny. In response to your first question: no. As far as I’m aware the blue Mass Storage screen stays on as long as the camera is connected to your computer or you turn off the camera. Regarding your second question, I have the same problem with both of my SJ4000 WiFi’s and Windows 7 as well. I contacted SJCam support and they sent me two different “patches” but I couldn’t open them so I’m stuck. You can check to see if you have the latest firmware version by going to the SJCam website SJCam Firmware, comparing the latest version listed to the one on your camera and updating yours if necessary. Failing that you could submit a request to their support.
You might have done so already but please be sure you have a genuine SJCam and not a knock-off or counterfeit camera. Based on the experience of other users, if you update a fake camera with the SJCam firmware your camera will malfunction or be disabled entirely.
Thanks Teri. Mine is the latest V1.2 (20160114). Seem like last firmware still stuck at the webcam thing. Thanks anyway.
hi,
May I know Which setting: loop recording or card dash mode; will automatically delete the old video clips while the memory is full up?
Thank you.
Car mode allows you to use an adapter plugged into your car’s 12V outlet. When you start your car the camera automatically turns on; when you shut off your vehicle the camera automatically turns off. I’m not sure what you mean by loop recording. My camera doesn’t have that menu setting. Regardless of any other settings, the camera will automatically begin to record over the oldest videos when the memory card is full.
The site has a very good downloadable manual at https://pevly.com/sj4000-manual/ with lots of good information, screenshots of menus and detailed operating instructions.
Thanks Teri,
I got what u mean. By default, it automatically begin to record over the oldest videos when the memory card is full. I shd get a 128gb card in this case.
Can you tell me the recording time if I use it as dashcam recording at 1080p and 720p respectively with 32 gb microsd card itll it stop recording. Thanks
I have two SJCAM 4000 which were working okay.
Today I took some video and when connecting to a Windows 10 computer (and tried a Chromebook) the computer says the mass storage card has an unreadable file format.
Disconnected I can see the video or photos on the camera, but when connected to the computer I just get that error message.
Sometimes the camera says ‘insert card’ . I switch off and start again and usually this is okay.
I gave up trying to get this to work and formatted the card using the camera format command. Then did a test photo. That did not make any difference when connected to the computers. I tried to format the card using the Windows 10 but it said ‘failed to format’. I tried to format using the Chromebook.
After all that the video is still on the card but can’t be accessed by either computer.
The problem seems to be this card. (Tried it in both cameras. Other card works in both and connects to computers)
The video is still there. I would like to transfer it to a computer. Can the card be saved?
Any ideas?
i have a problem! i have been using my sj4000 for a year or 2, however since yesterday whenenver i pressed the OK button to do video recording, it hangs at the first ‘scene’ that i am trying to record. it just hangs there. it cannot be turned off unless i take out the battery physically. please help me! i tried to change the firmware and reformat the memory card and change the memory card type to exFat. it still does the same. please help! really need to use it
Hi I just received my sj4000 wifi and it appears to be original (QR scans on box and manual. It has firmware version 1.3.
My issue is that I’m missing HDR and anti shake options. Was it ditched with the new firmware?
I did a test video and I’m not not too pleased with the results. Even with a steady hand, and a slow pan, the video shows a lot of shaking…..not at all what I was expecting to see comparing others sjcam videos.
Am I overlooking something?? Are there other setting to reduce this shaking?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Al
Hallo
I have a probblem with my camera and i didnt find any solution so far! I have a SJ4000wifi original and the problem is that if the battery drains while recording i cannot play the file that i get! It shows that it has volume but in all players i get that the file is not recognised or corrupted! Does anyone noticed something like that? Is there a way to make those files usable? Thanks! John
I have the same problem! Have you found a fix yet?
I found the problem!
1. Turn your camera off and insert the SD card.
2. Turn the camera on and go into the setting menu.
3. Find “Format” in the setting menu and select it.
Note: this will delete everything on the sd card.
4. Now do a test recording and open it on your computer.
hi
how can I transfer the files of sj4000wifi to pc with wifi?
thanks
Hi. As far as I’m aware you can’t transfer files from the SJ4000 to your computer via WiFi. You can transfer files via WiFi to your mobile device but you must use a card reader or a USB cable connected to the camera to transfer files to your computer.
Problem: I have a real SJCam SJ4000 Wifi. I downloaded the correct App. I turned on the camera. Activated the Wifi. Yellow light, Wifi, is blinking on top. When I go to the App and click “Connect Your Camera” I push it, it acknowledges it by going on and off, BUT IT DOES NOT ALOW ME TO CONNECT TO THE CAMERA!! WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??? THE SCREEN SAYS “MY SJCAM ALBUM.” SHOULD I HAVE OT ON ANOTHER SCREEN? HOW DO I GET TO THE OTHER SCREEN?
Really really good camera..but…
Because there is NO remote control option to find except your smartphone, (which isn’t fine when snowboarding at high speeds !!) I decided to buy a secondhand GoPro with separate LCD screen in combination with a removu..
Really really a pity that there is no solution of scan for making a remote control..

Hi,
I’m looking for a camera that can capture time lapse images. I’ve seen this camera supports that. But i was wondering for how long it can be turned on while making a time lapse video? Because i want to record the build of our house. But i don’t want to spend a lot of money on it. Do you guys recommend this or some other ‘budgetfree’ camera?
Thanks!
Do you mean continuously recording for such a long period? Building house can take months or years? I honestly do not think any camera will be able to continuously record for such a long period. But if you just want to record couple of hours per day, most of the cameras featured on the site will do the job.
Hello Pavle, i really enjoy your reviews!! could you tell me if there is a difference on the SJ4000 cameras for 1.5 inch and 2 inch screens?
I’m not sure what you mean, since SJ4000 has 1.5″ screen. You are probably referring to a different SJCAM model, you can see them all compared here https://pevly.com/all-sjcam-cameras-compared/
Awesome action camera, am fully satisfied with SJ4000, even i started my YouTube channel with it.
Thank you☺
Hi Pavle,
In terms of low light shooting (video/image) which one is better between SJ4000 Wifi and Eken H8R?
Hi, first of all, very good review, thks for it!
I’ve just bought my SJ4000 (without wifi) and I woud like to by a monopad. Can I use this camara with a monopad?
Also i’ve read that same accesories can be use on SJ4000 and GoPro. Is this true?
Gretting form Chile
Thanks, you can read this article https://pevly.com/top-11-accessories-for-sjcam-sj4000/ it specifically addresses monopods and other things you can use.
As for compatibility, most are compatible.
Hi, Pavle!
Great job on your reviews and comments. You have been most helpful to people like us who need assistance.
I just recently bought an SJCAM through an online store here in the Philippines. The exact description is this: SJCAM Second Edition SJ4000 Basic (NO WIFI) 12MP Action Video Camera (Black).
1. The camera itself bears the SJCAM logo but i noticed the waterproof case does not have the silver screws, instead just the plastic black thing.
2. The LCD screen is 2.0 inch LTPS.
3. The CPU is Novatek 96650.
4. The box also has the sticker that you can scratch to see its serial number.
Pretty much it seems to be authentic but i cannot find a review that fits the particular model.
Can you help me out on this? Would you say it’s authentic? Thank you so much and GOD bless!
I’d recommend you to read this https://pevly.com/sjcam-sj-scam-difference-real-fake-camera/ from what you said it appears to be authentic.
Thank you so much… I appreciate your swift response… The good LORD be with you always!
Hi, good day! First, I salute your passion in taking time and effort making these plenty of in-depth reviews!
For the past few weeks i have been reading through your reviews on sjcam and xiaomi yi action cam. It made me come into 3 options, budget-wise and usage-wise. I am thinking between sj4000wifi, xiaomi Yi, or sj4000+.
Im a newbie when it comes to actioncam or any other camera except my mobile phone with cam. I have been seeing sellers of sjcam in my country (Philippines) and some have the 2-inch version LCD while others still at 1.5inch. Are they authentic? Also, i got a little mixed-up after reading plenty of reviews (though really are helpful), i want to clarify which of the two sj model has photo/ video time lapse, photo burst, and true 60fps for fullHD?
I believe there may be updates on firmwares, like you mentioned, and maybe there are changes in settings/features this time. Sjcam is good for me,but i cud not resist the features xiaomi yi has to offer when it comes to features and vid/photo quality. If only it has lcd display,it’s really a good buy for me. But im worried of its setting which can only done via App.
Your comment and suggestion would be highly considered before i buy. 🙂
Thanks!
Of these you mentioned, I prefer YI. You can read the SJ4000 vs SJ4000+ comparison article. Read YI review. But most importantly, take a look at our best action cameras list. I recommend you to go through the “best” page and choose the one according to your needs/budget.
Good luck.
I bought a sj4000 and find a black spot over the image and video which is not present over the screen.is this a lens problem or a software bug. ? What to do.
